Job overview

The Clinical Coding Service at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has recently undergone a restructure of the team, which has created exciting development opportunities with the Clinical Coding Service.

We are looking for an experienced Clinical Coder to take on the role of Clinical Coding Trainer Assistant.  As the Trainer assistant you will be responsible for training new trainee coders into the service and supporting the Clinical Coding Trainer/Compliance Manager in the training provision across the Clinical Coding Service and wider Health Board.

The post holder will assist in the development and implementation of best practices and processes to ensure the highest quality of clinically coded data across the Health Board.

The post holder will be responsible for abstracting and analysing highly complex clinical information from a patient’s health record, in order to assign classification codes.

This is a full-time position based at one of our main hospital sites. You will have the opportunity for hybrid and flexible working.

Band 4 coders who do not currently hold the ACC will be employed as a trainee Band 5 Senior Clinical Coder using Annex 21 - at 75% of salary. They will be expected to undertake all aspects of the role and pass the ACC exam within 2 years of being in post.

Main duties of the job

Support the senior management team in the development of a high quality, robust clinical coding service for ABUHB, ensuring that coded data 
meets local and national targets for completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.

As Trainer assistant you will be required to liaise with all staff within the Health Board in relation to identified inaccuracies and lack of 
information.

The post holder will be required to consistently deliver against demanding deadlines and be accountable for maintaining accuracy and 
compliance with frequently changing National Standards and Coding Conventions.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Accredited Clinical Coder status (National Clinical Coding Qualification)
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical/medical terminology and ability to work autonomously across a full range of specialities.
  • Advanced ongoing in-depth knowledge and understanding of diseases and related health problems
  • Advanced ongoing in-depth knowledge and understanding of medical and surgical interventions and procedural terms
  • Knowledge of all microsoft office applications and other relevant IT software packages required
Desirable criteria
  • NCCQ Clinical Coding Auditor qualification
  • NCCQ Clinical Coding Trainer Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Analyse and apply National Clinical Coding Standards and to a broad range of healthcare specialties and scenarios which can often be highly complex and conflicting
  • Extensive experience coding across a wide range of specialties of all complexities
  • Experience of working under pressure to deliver set Welsh Government in month and year- end targets, whilst also ensuring quality of data is of a high standard
  • Experience of interogating both paper records and electonic systems / applications to extract clinical information for the purpose of clinical coding some of which can be conflicting
  • Previous Management, Supervisory or mentoring experience

  • Advanced problem solving skills
  • Ability to practically apply clinical codes to highly complex / complex clinical coding scenarios whereby there is often no national or local standard to accurately reflect he clinical picture
  • Explicit attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to relay complex coding information to clinical coding colleagues, operational staff and clinicians
  • Be proactive in raising awareness within the Health Board of the importance of the work that the clinical coding department undertakes
