A vacancy has arisen for a band 5 neurophysiologist to join the Neurophysiology dept at St. Woolos Hospital, Newport. This position would suit a newly qualified neurophysiologist or someone who has recently graduated from Swansea University BSc (Hons) Neurophysiology course.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate in the recording of EEGs and prolonged EEGs, both in the department and on wards on patients of all ages and with a variety of medical and psychiatric conditions. The successful applicant will also be expected to produce technical reports on all patients. They will also be required to perform sleep deprived, melatonin sedated sleep EEGs as well as home telemetry EEGs. 

Additionally, they will be expected to assist, when required, with the consultant led EMG clinic as well as undertake training to perform nerve conduction studies and to then actively participate in the physiologist led nerve conduction study clinics.

The successful applicant will also be encouraged to complete both the ANS part 1 and part 2 syllabuses, pass the ANS examinations associated with each syllabus and maintain a comprehensive portfolio both for the duration of their training and as evidence of ongoing CPD. They should also be prepared to register with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists  (RCCP)  and/or Academy of Healthcare Scientists (AHCS).

Main duties of the job

To perform routine EEG/sleep EEG recordings on adults and children as outpatients both onsite and offsite and inpatients onsite whilst awake, adapting the technique where necessary to accommodate the clinical state (such as psychological, emotional and aggressive) and degree of co-operation of the patient (such as learning disabilities and challenging behaviours).

Use telemetry (video) equipment during the EEG recordings having obtained written consent.

Advise patients before leaving the department of any necessary precautions around photo sensitivity and sedation.

To transport portable equipment from the department to the ward to to perform EEG recordings at the bedside, adapting the technique where necessary to accommodate the clinical state (such as psychological, emotional and aggressive) and degree of co-operation of the patient (such as learning disabilities and challenging behaviours).

To utilise digital EEG software to produce a detailed factual report on EEG recordings for viewing by the Consultant Neurophysiologist.

This post is a fixed term/secondment for 8 months to meet the needs of the service. If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.
