Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity to join our Ophthalmic Imaging Team as a Band 3 Ophthalmic Technician.
Ophthalmic Imaging sits within Ophthalmology Outpatients, we are part of a multi-disciplinary team including Nursing, Optometry, Orthoptists and Clinicians.
Candidates should have a commitment to supporting the directorate in providing high quality patient care and diagnostic imaging for patients with a wide range of ophthalmic conditions.
The post is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital but will be required to cover clinics across the Health Board on a rotational basis.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work as part of a team of Imaging Technicians, Associate Practitioners and Ophthalmic Photographers to provide an imaging service for all specialities within the Ophthalmology Directorate
Working within Ophthalmology Outpatients alongside the Ophthalmology Multidisciplinary Team, the main duties are to undertake a range of routine ophthalmic tests including Optical Coherence Tomography, widefield retinal imaging, visual acuity tests, visual fields and intra ocular pressure measurement.
Band 3 Ophthalmic Imaging Technicians undertake routine OCT and widefield imaging.
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, motivated and have excellent communication skills, employing empathy and tact with patients, relatives and fellow staff alike.

- NVQ 3 or equivalent knowledge and experience within Ophthalmology.

- Current or previous experience working in healthcare or NHS. Evidence of technical experience working within Ophthalmology.

- Computer literate to a good standard.
Desirable criteria
- An understanding of how imaging software and databases work. An understanding of basic photographic principles – lighting and focus.
- Experience in a range of a routine ophthalmic imaging.
