Job overview

We are looking for a Nurse or an Allied Health Professional (e.g. Speech and Language Therapist or Occupational Therapist) to join our enthusiastic Neuro-developmental Team based at the Newberry Child Development Centre

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will have considerable experience of working with children and young people with Neuro-developmental Disorders and have experience of working within a diagnostic team or contributing to one. Ideally, we seek a candidate who has already completed ADOS 2 training and has experience of assessing a child’s neuro-developmental skills in a range of settings, but willingness to further train would be considered.

The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills and have experience of having difficult conversations with families. They will be able to advise on a wide range of neurodevelopmental friendly strategies. The candidate will have knowledge of the possible differential diagnoses and will be able to use this understanding to support their decision making.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or Occupational Therapy
  • Current HCPC Registration
  • CPD record should include evidence of relevant clinical courses in the field of Autism
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate training in related field

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working as a Band 6 SLT or OT with children
  • Experience of working in a variety of settings, e.g. schools, homes, clinics
  • Extensive knowledge of recognised strategies used to support children and young people with Autism
  • Experience of working with vulnerable or challenging families
  • Ability to draw on own clinical experience to inform multidisciplinary discussion around differential diagnosis
  • Understanding and working knowledge of clinical governance current topics in the NHS
  • Experience of supervising and supporting junior colleagues, students and professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Trained to administer the ADOS 2
  • Undertaken further training in the areas of developmental trauma and attachment
  • Experience in undertaking clinical audit

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Communication skills including empathy, motivational and assertiveness skills. Ability to resolve conflict.
  • Ability to act as an autonomous practitioner, organising, prioritising and delegating workloads as appropriate
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to work flexibly across clinical areas and adapt to the needs of the service
  • Ability to teach/train and motivate others
