Job overview
To manage the departments nursing establishment ensuring the appropriate allocation of nursing staff to meet the needs of the service. To lead and be accountable for the departments nursing, medical and surgical supplies budgets on behalf of the Service Manager, providing analysis of expenditure when required.
To provide clinical leadership in nursing practice and progress patient pathways. To take the lead role in developing the departments nursing establishment, ensuring that all the necessary nursing skills are available to the department. Promote high quality care to meet all nursing needs of the patients within the department.
Act as a role model, demonstrating excellence in clinical skills.
To represent the views and interests of the department nurses at Radiology management meetings and inter department meetings.
To work in close collaboration and co-operation with Trust colleagues, taking the lead role in promoting and developing the role of the diagnostic imaging nursing team to provide competent and effective care in a safe environment. Working with the Divisional Health and Safety and Clinical Governance committees.

To be active in the Radiology team by working in partnership with Trust objectives to facilitate the development of clinical practice and professional development of the department nursing staff.
To ensure that patient care is co-ordinated and delivered to a high standard. To act at all times in the best interest of the patients and the organisation ensuring that a quality service is provided.
To communicate clinical information, advice and when necessary health education to patients and their carers. Promote and maintain high standards of patient confidentiality and be prepared to challenge when these standards are not met.
To use evidence based practice and ensure clinical practice is based on sound knowledge and evaluated by audit.
Undertake all nursing procedures in accordance to Trust policies and procedures and ensure these are understood and adhered to by all department nursing staff.
To communicate effectively within the MDT across the Trust, ensuring the timely dissemination of relevant information.
To develop and promote a suitable learning environment for nursing students and new staff. Be familiar with Trust policies in relation to students. Support learning by forming good communication channels with the clinical nurse educators. Ensure all staff attend regular educational updates.
To establish, supervise and maintain an effective clinical teaching programme for all nursing staff within the department, ensuring that the programme is regularly updated.
To be a resource and give support to the Radiologist with any process or procedure necessary for examinations, investigations and treatment of patients.
To have a wide based knowledge of the specialised equipment used for radiological procedures and to be competent in its use. Ensuring all staff is trained in safe usage and disposal of the equipment.
Ensuring that the preparation of physical environments, equipment and patients are prepared to a high standard prior to procedures. Ensure standards are met by audits and reflective working.
Administer medications and other treatments as per clinical guidelines. Ensure high standards of documentation /record keeping at all times as appropriate, ensuring that the nursing team is trained and safe to support these tasks to NMC standards.
To ensure safe custody and administration of drugs according to the JPUH policy and procedures.
To plan and schedule the off duty and rota’s for the nursing team in accordance with the needs of the service. To maintain safe effective use of department nursing team according to their skill and knowledge in supporting the operational functioning of the department.
To directly manage sickness/absenteeism in accordance with Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines and take action as required in line with Trust policies.
To take a lead role in the recruitment and selection of nursing staff within the department.
To maintain systems of performance management of nursing staff within the department and lead on PDP interviews for all nursing team members. Assist in the formulation of Personal Development Plans and facilitate the compliance with Trust, department and team objectives. Organise and plan appropriate follow up interviews.
To take a lead role in the development of the Department induction/training programmes for all new nursing staff and ensure that the appropriate induction takes place.
To identify/develop appropriate in-service training programme for all nursing staff within the department.
Ensure that nursing staff attend mandatory training study days and keep records of attendance.
Facilitate nursing staff in Enhanced Skills Training Programme. Assist in the audit process to ensure best clinical practice.
Provide teaching opportunities to Radiography Students, while on placement in the department. Engage in teaching both undergraduate and qualified radiographers including newly appointed staff.
To work in conjunction within the multi-disciplinary team in the day-to-day operational management of the department.
Take a pro-active role in identifying patient waiting list/ patient flow problems and actively seek solutions with senior department staff to help resolve problems.
Review patient pathways to ensure best care and patient experience.
Use effective communication to disseminate information to the team and members of the MDT.
To ensure that all required equipment is available and that all the nursing staff is trained to use it safely. Keep records of training. Take responsibility for identifying equipment requirements and drafting cases of need as required
To represent the Radiology department nursing team at high level forums/meetings within the trust, acting as a member the department’s senior staff team. Ensure department views are represented and raise any concerns as appropriate.
If service or developmental changes are required and agreed, work in collaboration with Trust and senior department staff to facilitate these changes to happen

Education and Qualification
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with current NMC
- Diploma/Degree in Healthcare or related subject, or relevant experience
- Mentorship Qualification
Desirable criteria
- Professional management qualification or working towards
- Qualification in radiology nursing, or radiology experience
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in a leadership role
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of staffing management, and evidence of managing this
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of budgetary management
- Evidence of extensive knowledge of radiological specialism
Skills and Knowledge

- Good understanding operational and professional issues at trust and department level.
