Job overview

We are hiring Band 2 Healthcare Assistants 

Healthcare Assistants  at James Paget University Hospital provide a range of personal care and delegated clinical duties under the guidance of a registered healthcare professional.

Working as part of a  multidisciplinary team our Healthcare Assistants   undertake high quality, caring and compassionate  care, containing to the delivery of a high quality healthcare to patients. 

The HCA role is a great entry-point into an NHS career – many of our Healthcare Assistants go on to complete further training to develop their skills and further their career.

As HCA with no previous experience in care, a band 2 will provide an opportunity of progression to band 3 SHCA once training competencies are attained.

In this busy environment, roles vary depending on the type of area you work in. For example, working as a healthcare assistant on a ward is very different to working as an HCA in outpatient areas.

Main duties of the job

Key duties and responsibilities

Working under the direction of a Registered Health Care Professional, HCAs participate in the clinical care provided to patients, prioritising workload appropriately and developing competencies that safeguard practice and effectiveness in role. Specific duties and responsibilities include;

  • Work as part of a designated clinical and care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual
  • Assist patients with personal hygiene, toileting and use of continence aids
  • Support Moving and Handling, use of mobility aids, correct patient positioning, assess pressure areas and skin integrity
  • Developing positive relationships with parents, families and carers
  • Be aware of the patient’s needs – emotional, social, physical, and cultural. Respect privacy, dignity and beliefs.
  • Acts in a way that supports equality and diversity values.
  • Work as part of the team in a co-operative, professional and constructive manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Report any information regarding the wellbeing of the patients to the Registered Health Care Professional in a timely manner.
  • Manage and organise time and activities to support and meet the needs of individuals
  • To empower patients and their families to make their own decisions about health and choices.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a key member of the team you will be allocated on a shift by shift basis to work and support ward based colleagues in areas where staffing and, or patient acuity/dependency risk assessments indicate that help is required.

As a Healthcare Assistant you will be supported through the Care Certificate and dedicated enhanced supervision and engagement training - induction will include working across a range of specialities.

To fulfil the needs of service delivery to patients/service users and in line with our current team of clinicians, the post holder will work as part of a flexible rota over seven days a week, which will include working evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English Language and Maths A to C or 4 -9 or functional skills or equivalent
  • Care Certificate or willingness to undertake
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent or willing to undertake a Level 3 apprenticeship in Senior Healthcare Support

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a health, social or residential care setting
  • To demonstrate a range of procedures and practices, base level of theoretical knowledge
  • Demonstrate through previous experience the ability to escalate concerns
  • Ability to work in a multi-agency team
  • Ability to work with staff from a diverse range of backgrounds
  • Inpatient services/community/ social or residential services
Desirable criteria
  • Previous care experience within an NHS environment
