The post holder will work closely with the Maternity Quality and Governance Matron and team to ensure full implementation of risk management and effective practice for safe service delivery and maintaining clinical quality standards in maternity.
The post holder has an important role within the maternity service of coordinating the interface between the women and families that use the maternity service and the Senior Maternity Management Team.
This role is to provide maternity cover.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work with the Maternity Quality and Governance Matron and the Senior Maternity Management Team to:
- · Work with the multidisciplinary team to ensure a quality service that is responsive to the needs of service users
- · Ensure that the Maternity Risk Management Strategy is effectively conveyed to all staff and is translated into operational practice.
- · Undertake clinical incidents (including serious incidents), write up reports of such investigations, make recommendations and ensure action plans are implemented.
- · Be involved in reviewing previously reported incidents and evaluate their action plans to determine whether or not recommendations have been implemented.
- · To develop appropriate action plans to minimise risks, including identifying resource implications, changes in clinical practice and administrative procedures required.
- · Assist the Quality and Governance Matron and Maternity Project Manager in developing and delivering a planned programme of work to maintain CNST within Maternity.
- · Effectively utilise the Trust’s information management systems and technology.
- · Assist in the maintenance of the Maternity Risk register – this involves working with clinical staff to identify risks and carry out risk assessments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will work with the Maternity Quality and Governance Matron and the Senior Maternity Management Team to:
- · Act as a clinical role model promoting professional, competent standards, working closely with the multi-disciplinary team.
- · Be actively involved in the various meetings within the service that form the maternity governance structure, including deputising where necessary for the Maternity Quality and Governance Matron.
- · Act as a point of contact, by being highly visible and approachable to staff, women and their families using the service, and the public so that open and honest communication channels are created and effective assessments of care delivery and risk management can be undertaken.
- · Be available to staff whilst on duty to provide advice and support.
- · To participate in the service 24hr managerial on call rota.
- · To undertake any relevant Freedom of Information requests.
- · To undertake extended hour roles as appropriate to support the delivery of the quality agenda throughout the 24 hour care period.
- · Work clinically as required.
- · Develop Clinical Risk Management initiatives and strategies.
- · Be able to investigate, with support, serious untoward incidents completely and thoroughly, using the appropriate methods (i.e.: root cause analysis) ensuring timescales are met and learning takes place.
- · Be able to ensure that all required statistics are available as required by the service, Division and Trust.
- · To produce the Risk and Governance newsletter for learning and distribution to all maternity staff.
- · Audit of practice where appropriate following investigation into clinical incidents and ensuring that any necessary changes in practice are incorporated into Divisional policies and guidelines.
General

· All employees must comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act and take responsibility for unit security arrangements, ensuring the protection of women, babies and staff.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Midwife currently eligible to practice
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of post registration education at BSc level, relevant experience will be considered
- Evidence of relevant post registration education at MSc level , relevant experience will also be considered
- Previous training in investigation and report writing
Experience and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience working at band 7 or a senior 6 midwife position
- Knowledge of clinical governance and risk management at a local and national level
- Experience of going through a change in practice as a result of risk management issue
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of the Maternity Governance Structure
- Previous experience of involvement in risk management investigations
Skills, abilities and competen
Essential criteria
- Good communicator with colleagues even in challenging situations
- Understanding of clinical guidelines, process for review and role of clinical guidelines in practice
Desirable criteria
- Ability to produce a chronology of care provided
- Ability to meet deadlines
