Are you a dynamic, compassionate leader with a passion for children’s healthcare? The James Paget University Hospital is seeking an experienced and driven Paediatric Matron to lead our dedicated paediatric services.

As our Paediatric Matron, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality, safe, and effective care to children and their families. You will provide visible leadership, ensuring excellent standards of clinical practice, patient experience, and staff wellbeing across our paediatric wards and services.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide clinical, managerial and professional leadership to nursing / AHP staff at all levels within their area of responsibility ensuring that patient care is delivered to a high standard.

The post holder will be responsible for the on-going safe and effective delivery for their designated portfolio to ensure the attainment of quality and clinical performance indicators concerned with nursing and midwifery practice and the wider context of patient care delivery.

The post holder will work collaboratively with the Head of neonatal, CYP services to ensure all relevant nursing and midwifery / AHP measures/indicators are robustly monitored, and effective governance arrangements are in place to ensure that patients consistently receive a good experience that meets all relevant aspects of the CQC key Lines of Enquiry.

The post holder will be responsible for leading on service and professional developments, working in close liaison with the head of neonatal, CYP services and  Divisional clinical teams to ensure all developments are considered and contribute to the wider aims of the Trust’s 5 Year Strategy and the underpinning suite of strategies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main responsibilities include providing visible leadership for the portfolio of responsibility and across the Trust, acting as a positive role model, using influencing skills and being an ambassador for excellence in patient care. Supporting staff to achieve best possible outcomes for patients and achieving all components of the nursing practice assurance framework.

Additionally, providing pastoral support to staff ensuring health and well being is promoted at all times. Taking responsibility for best use of financial resources. Contributing to transformation programmes and facilitating innovations.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Sick children’s Nurse
  • First Degree or relevant experience
  • Evidence of on-going CPD at relevant level
  • Leadership qualification or equivalent experience
  • Management diploma or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Masters degree or working towards

Expereince and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Extensive post registration experience
  • Extensive experience and knowledge of national, regional and local vision for nursing practice
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Positive outcomes from change management within acute inpatient/outpatient
  • Experience of working with IT systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of business planning
