Job overview

The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint two Clinical Fellows in Intensive Care Medicine. The posts are to reflect the needs of the Anaesthetic and Intensive Care Department and to support the introduction of newer working practices.

Main duties of the job

The pay band you will be offered will be that operational at the time you sign your contract in line with Medical and Dental terms and conditions of service.

The on call team consists of ICU Consultant and ICU Junior, a Consultant Generalist on call with experienced middle grade anaesthetist resident for obstetrics and pain, and theatre junior anaesthetist (up to 2200hrs).  The team out of hours, although having allocated priorities to roles, work collectively to cover the needs of the patients. This includes:

  • Obstetric anaesthesia and analgesia
  • Emergency theatre work
  • Intensive Care ward work
  • Inter and Intra Hospital Transfers
  • Anaesthetic support to the wards and Accident and Emergency Department

Out of hours cover will usually include holding an emergency bleep.  Anaesthetists are called for Cardiac, Obstetric and Trauma Emergencies and pain management issues for all ages of patient and they are expected to respond in an appropriate manner. The support of seniors will always be available. The Anaesthetists works as a team during the out of hour’s period and although priority call of duty will be to the area, designated demand may require flexibility.

Working for our organisation

The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (JPUH) provides Medical Services for a population of approximately 230,000 living in South East Norfolk and North East Suffolk, plus a large number of visitors to the coast and Broads National Park during the summer months. In addition, it provides approximately 1/3 of the Secondary Care Teaching for the  UEA Medical School. The Trust is forward looking and highly regarded within the Region. It became the first Foundation Trust in Norfolk/Suffolk in 2006.

There is an active teaching/research programme within the department and there are links with the University of East Anglia. There is an excellent purpose built training and education centre on site at the James Paget University Hospital along with a newly refurbished library and learning café area.
