We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 3 Medical Administrator/Secretary to join our friendly Orthopaedic Secretarial team within the Division of Surgery. This role is ideal for a candidate who is compassionate and would like to make a positive difference to patient experience. Whilst not a hands on patient role this position enables the post holder to speak with patients on a daily basis and improve hospital waiting times, by working effectively and efficiently. 

Main duties of the job

The Medical Secretary role is a highly diverse, demanding but rewarding role, working as part of a supportive and dynamic team. The role entails supporting clinicians on a day-to-day basis, specifically in helping coordinate the trauma service. It is essential that the successful applicant has the ability to type to a high standard and a desire to develop and learn new skills and competencies.

Applicants must be organised, a team player, have the ability to work under their own initiative and be able to prioritise a competing workload. Whilst experience in a medical secretary role is preferred, it is not essential. Full training and support would be offered to the candidate who has the skills and qualities required for the role. 

The post would be open to hybrid working on site or from home, but there would be a requirement for the hours of work to be across Mondays to Fridays to mirror the needs of the service. There is no requirement for weekend or evening working as part of this role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the team in managing clinical pathways, booking and scheduling theatre operating lists, typing clinics, dealing with telephone queries, managing and administrating results, dealing with post and supporting the delivery of the RTT targets for the department; in accordance with National and Trust guidelines.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Typing qualifications to RSA II or equivalent experience
  • Good general standard of literacy and numeracy
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of medical terminology/AMSPAR qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous digital/audio typing experience
  • Working knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Office packages, including Word, Outlook, Excel
  • Working knowledge and experience of using NHS systems
Desirable criteria
  • Secretarial experience in a clinical environment
