Job overview

We are seeking a part-time experienced enthusiastic nursing assistant to join our dedicated and friendly team within the Children’s Short Breaks Home Nursing Team (CSBHNT) who work across Norfolk.  You will also do occasional shifts within our residential shortbreaks unit, Squirrels which is situated in Aylsham.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate experience of working with children with health needs and/or learning disabilities.  They will be enthusiastic, be able to work flexibly, within a team and also independently.  They will have good communication skills and be able to work in partnership with families.  The successful candidate will require access to a vehicle

Main duties of the job

Childrens Short Breaks Home Nursing Team provides respite within the community setting for children with complex health needs within their own homes. The team consists of experienced staff nurses and nursing assistants and work with children aged from birth to 18yrs of age who have additional health needs.  This role includes days, evenings, weekends and night shifts. You will be provided with any training and skills you require for each individual child that you will be caring for.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To manage, under indirect supervision, own workload within competencies of the post
  • To carry out planned care for the child within the home, clinic or residential short breaks unit.
  • To care for allocated children according to their care plans, liaising with parents / Registered Nurses for further advice as required.
  • To carry out baseline observations for children in their care as required, escalating as appropriate.
  • To review and record care provided on the child’s Systm One record following the trust’s policy for record keeping.
  • To support Registered nurses with updating the Child’s care plans as required.
  • To gather information about the Child’s development, communication and annual educational goals by visiting them at School or early years and attending annual education reviews.
  • To attend keyworker or multi-disciplinary meetings as required.
  • To work with the Registered Nurses and Clinical Leads to identify relevant training needs to fulfil this role, taking an active part in the evaluation process.
  • To act in accordance with the Local Safeguarding Children’s Board policies and procedures, attending regular safeguarding supervision sessions and training.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Maths and English minimum grade C or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Nursery Nurse Qualification
  • Knowledge of practical childcare
  • Knowledge of play strategies
  • Knowledge of child development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with a variety of children
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with children with disabilities and/or working in children’s own homes

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work with indirect supervision of coordinator
  • Good organisational skills
  • Ability to remain calm and work effectively in pressure situations
  • Basic IT Skills
  • Willingness to undertake training and development appropriate to the needs of the post
  • Full driving License and access to vehicle for work purposes
  • Good communication skills with children, families and professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working independently
  • Experience of working with people with sensory impairments and/or communication difficulties
  • Knowledge of alternative forms of communication
