Job overview

Rollesby Ward PICU has an exciting opportunity for a Charge Nurse to join the team. Rollesby Ward is a 10 bed female Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, it has strong philosophy of holistic trauma informed care.

 As a charge nurse you would be an important part of the leadership team. Working with the MDT to support service delivery, lead on improvements projects and support junior staff.

 We are looking for a compassionate individual who is committed to providing high quality inpatient care. You will need excellent communication skills and be able to work well with other professionals in planning and delivering care.

Rollesby Ward is committed to the development of staff and the role will include mentoring and training opportunities.   

Main duties of the job

Rollesby Ward is looking for an enthusiastic and caring charge nurse. They would have an active role in leadership and role modelling excellent care to others this can include:

  • Have excellent knowledge of the Mental health act.
  • Have excellent record keeping skills, including care documentation and audits.
  • Have good communications both within the multi-disciplinary team and with other professionals such as social care. 
  • Being the head of a care team, ensuring patient needs are advocated for and that staff feel supported in their role. 
  • Keeping up to date with the most recent NICE guidelines and local procedures and sharing any changes with the team. 
  • Being lead in a certain area for the ward e.g. Infection control, safeguarding
  • Ensuring that adequate supervision is given to those who you have been allocated. 
  • Take part in Quality Improvement projects where relevant. 
  •  Be trained in, or able to be able to be trained in Prevention and management of violence and aggression.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RMN
  • Registration with the NMC and Registered Mental Health Nurse
  • Completion of the preceptorship
  • Signed off as a mentor/supervisor
  • Post-graduate diploma or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • ENB 998 / Mentorship
  • Leadership / Management Training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to problem solve autonomously
  • Relevant post registration experience in a mental health setting
Desirable criteria
  • At least 2 years experience as Band 5
  • Experience working in a PICU
  • Management / Leadership of junior staff.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to show leadership and management skills
  • Ability to work regularly unsupervised
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good verbal and written skills
  • Good observation and reporting skills
  • Ability to use own initiative

  • Fitness to undergo full PMA training and perform full duties of the post
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to travel, flexibility and adaptability and the ability to undertake Breakaway and Physical Intervention training . Also Remain trained in Breakaway and/or Physical Intervention techniques
  • Enthusiastic and well-motivated and able to work as part of a close team. Also awareness and understanding of equality and diversity issues and flexibility of duty and hours over a 24hr 7 day a week period
