Job overview

 Responsibility for the clinical, operational, performance and financial 
management functions of their designated services. This will involve ensuring effective and efficient  resource utilisation; the delivery of evidence-based patient care and these services are safe. In 
conjunction with the lead clinician, the matron will provide clear, visible leadership, strategic vision and clinical expertise to enhance the service user experience.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will ensure that consistent high standards of patient safety, quality and clinical  care are part of everyday practice within the clinical area.
• They will act as a Dignity Champion ensuring that respect and dignity underpin and inform all  practice.
• They will promote and deliver the matron agenda, as defined by the Department of Health.
• They will provide a visible, accessible, and authoritative presence in clinical settings and  related forums to patients, carers and staff.
• They will provide clear and effective clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary care team.
• They will provide support to staff and facilitate staff development via training, clinical  supervision, and mentorship.
• They will ensure that clinical care is based on best practice and continuous service  improvement initiatives, e.g. AIMS and RTTC.
• They will undertake the lead role in the development of nursing practice within the inpatient 
setting, consistent with the Trust’s and national strategies.
• They will lead on governance within the clinical area, ensuring compliance with registration 
requirements and quality initiatives including CQC and CQUIN.
• The matrons will lead on risk assessment in their clinical areas
• They will raise standards of patient safety, quality and clinical care within clinical environments.
