Hi! My name is Catherine (Kat)! I am the PMA Lead Practitioner. Firstly, thank you for your interest in the PMA Instructor role. I wanted to take some time just to let you know what a typical day looks like in our department. We are a small and supportive team with a diverse range of backgrounds and experience. We are dedicated to improving the safety of staff and patients alike through delivering breakaway, conflict resolution and physical intervention training. On a typical day you will be delivering training to our staff, visiting the wards to offer support and utilising any existing skills to develop our team. As a team we are placing a large emphasis on our own continued professional development, learning and education and welcome those who are keen to develop. It is an exciting time to join our team, we have just gained our own accreditation meeting the restraint reduction network training standards and have exciting plans. You will need to have been continuously employed in a support or care role within social care, education or a health care environment for a period of not less than two years.
Main duties of the job
This physical role will include delivering Conflict Resolution theory, Breakaway techniques and Physical Intervention skills training to NSFT staff, as part of the subject area of Prevention and Management of Aggression.
Work alongside the clinical staff to continue to educate by role modelling best practice in prevention and management of aggression.
You will need effective communication and listening skills, to work within a multi-disciplinary team to support our service users, staff and stakeholders.
You will be eager to expand your understanding of the subject area increasing your knowledge through continuous reflective practice to enhance your personal and professional development.
Work within the team to provide a safe learning and teaching environment to support the decision-making process in the assessment of skills, knowledge and attitude.
You will plan, prioritise and manage your own time effectively, seek guidance from your peers', as well as building relationships with our stakeholders.
You will maintain your own physical ability to ensure you can fully carry out your role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Your main responsibilities on commencement of this role would be to complete your 6-month preceptorship programme and continue to develop in your role to be accredited as a PMA instructor. You will also need to complete your AET (Award in Education and Teaching).
You need to have at least two years' clinical experience working in mental health or learning disability settings within the NHS or other Health Care Settings.
You will have an interest in teaching, be passionate about reducing restrictive interventions and be keen to develop the theoretical knowledge required surrounding violence reduction.
It is preferable that you have some experience delivering training however you will be fully supported by our team to enable you to confidently deliver our training curriculum.
You need to be physically apt to complete the daily activities involved in teaching physical intervention and personal safety skills daily.
Your main role and responsibilities will be to deliver the training, contribute to the day-to-day operational needs of the department, complete Health and Safety checks, prepare your teaching environment and comply with the Data Protection Act (2018) when completing relevant paperwork, and in discussions.
Maintain and increase knowledge in legislation, national guidance and NSFT Trust policies which are relevant to PMA and the clinical settings.
Complete all statutory and mandatory training needs as applicable to your role, with the willingness to complete additional learning specific to clinical practice in a timely manner.
Be able to develop positive professional relationships with all grades, disciplines and service users in the clinical and teaching environments and be actively involved in team discussions.
Be proactive and manage your own time effectively, share knowledge of your learning to the team and keep up to date e calendar information necessary for effective communication.
You can recognise and be proactive in developing confidence to reduce and manage anxiety levels for our attendees to support their learning.
You are willing to continue to develop your skills in teaching, effective communication and group management skills, can use your own initiative and recognise when to seek support and advice from your peers.
You will be required to have the necessary ICT skills to deliver training and complete administrative tasks as required within your role. Training to deliver theory on Microsoft teams will be given.
