Job overview
We are currently recruiting a Healthcare Support Worker to join our wonderful team at St Monica’s Inpatient Unit in Easingwold on a 9 Month Fixed Term basis to cover maternity leave. St Monica’s Hospital is a 12 bedded Integrated Care Community Inpatient Unit set in the idyllic market town of Easingwold tucked away at the foot of the Howardian Hills and is the Trust’s smallest community hospital. It provides high standards of rehabilitation, palliative and general nursing and medical and day care including physiotherapy and occupational therapy to patients who are registered with local GP surgeries.
JOB SUMMARY/ PURPOSE:
To demonstrate care and compassion whilst ensuring that patients’ needs are met
To carry out nursing and non-nursing duties as delegated by the registered nurse using own initiative within the level of competence expected for the role.
To assist and support members of the multi-professional team to provide a high standard of patient - centred care, performing duties without the need for constant direct supervision.
Main duties of the job
- Supporting patients to make choices about their care and ensure that those choices are respected
- Promoting and encouraging independence
- Assisting patients with hygiene needs including care of their skin, mouth, eyes, hair, nails, feet and teeth; encouraging self care when possible
- Supporting patients with elimination needs; assisting to use toilet facilities or provision of bed pans, urinals, commodes and vomit bowls.
- Care of urinary catheters, stomas and other aids that enable the patient to perform elimination and record actions/ findings on the appropriate documentation
- Promote continence and manage incontinence according to the patient’s individual assessment and plan of care
- Support the multidisciplinary team in the prevention and management of damage to patients’ skin, ensuring that correct moving and handling techniques and use of pressure relieving aids are used; report any changes in skin condition to the registered nurse/ midwife
- Following delegation by the Registered nurse, undertake agreed clinical activities relevant to the post & clinical area e.g., obtain specimens from patients (urine, faeces, blood, sputum and vomit; screening swabs as required in accordance with Trust policy) and record actions/ findings on the appropriate documentation
- Following delegation by the Registered nurse, undertake simple physiological observations and dressings, record actions/ findings on the appropriate documentation

- 1-year’s previous experience in a Health Care Support Worker role.
Qualifications and Skills

- Completion of the Skills for Health Care Certificate (or equivalent
- Numeracy skills to Level 1 (GCSE Grade 2-3, D-F or equivalent
- Basic IT skills, able to digitally record observations accurately and use applications such as email on a computer or smart device (e.g. tablet
- Competent to record and escalate patient observations, undertake venepuncture, and to be trained in cannulation and catheterisation
- Demonstrable effective written and verbal communication skills
Desirable criteria
- Experience in a health or social care setting
