Non-Executive & Associate Non-Executive Directors

NHS Non-Executive: NHS Trust Non-Executive/Associate Non-Executive Member/Director

Job overview

Join our vigorous and forward-thinking Board of Directors at HDFT

Following a number of changes on its Board of Directors, the Trust is looking to appoint to three vital roles to help lead the Trust's continuing improvement journey and help support the delivery of the Trust's Strategy to further improve on the high quality healthcare service we provide.

We are seeking two Non-Executive Directors to join our Board. In order to provide the right balance and skill mix to our existing Board, we seek at least one individual with Medical Experience and would particularly welcome the second individual to have Clinical Experience. The individuals should have worked at a senior level in the NHS, ideally with Board-level or equivalent expertise in an expanding and complex enterprise.

We are also seeking an Associate Non-Executive to join our Board. We would particularly welcome applications from those with experience in tackling health inequalities, Research and Innovation or Digital expertise - working at a senior level in the NHS or in a field which would complement that of our existing Board of Directors.

Main duties of the job

These are exciting roles in a vibrant environment, providing the opportunity to be at the forefront of new thinking in today’s NHS. The time commitment for the Non-Exec Roles is on average 5 days per month and the posts will attract remuneration at the rate of £13,261 per annum. The time commitment for the Associate Non-Exec role is on average 2-3 days per month and the post will attract remuneration at the rate of c£7,000 per annum.

Prospective applicants' experience should include a demonstrable track record of success and an understanding of, and commitment to, values of accountability, probity, openness and equality of opportunity. You will be a strategic thinker and experienced in leading and delivering complex organisational change. You will have excellent communication and listening skills, as well as being commercially and politically astute. An understanding of the role of Non-Executive Directors is essential, as is an ability to analyse complex information and an appreciation of the emerging context for the NHS.

Working for our organisation

High-performing Foundation Trust seeks to appoint two Non-Executive Directors and one Associate Non-Executive Director to help continue to lead its improvement journey.

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust is a high-performing organisation rated “Good” overall and “Outstanding” for Care by the Care Quality Commission. The Trust exists to serve two groups: the patients who we care for in our hospitals and community services in Harrogate and District, and wider North Yorkshire; and the children and young people who we support through our Children’s Public Health Services across large parts of the North East and Yorkshire. Our Strategy makes it clear that our patients and children always come first.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As part of the unitary Board of Directors, Non-Executive Directors are ultimately and collectively responsible for all aspects of the performance of the Trust and play a crucial role in bringing an independent perspective to the boardroom in addition to any specific knowledge and skills they may have. Non-Executive Directors have a duty to uphold the highest standards of integrity and probity, as laid out in the Nolan principles, and to foster good relations in the boardroom. They should apply similar standards of care and skill in their role as a Non-Executive Director of a Foundation Trust as they would in similar roles elsewhere.

The Associate Non-Executive Director role is used successfully in the NHS to support Board succession planning, diversity and achieving a balance of Board level skills. The role is a step-up role aimed at attracting potential Non-Executive Director candidates who do not yet have sufficient board-level experience but have the ability and potential to succeed in the role. The role enjoys a vast range of opportunities for development and achievement of Board level skills. Although it is a non-voting role, you will have full sight of strategic decision making within the Trust, and the natural progression for an Associate Non-Executive Director role would be to progress to a Non-Executive Director role in the future.

Please see the combined job description attached for a full list of duties and responsibilities for both the Non-Executive Director and Associate Non-Executive Director roles.
