Job overview

Day-to-day management of general surgical patients under general surgery

Care of out-patients, including the conducting of clinics under the supervision of a Consultant General Surgeon.

To undertake theatre lists on general surgical patients under the supervision of a Consultant Surgeon.

The post-holders are expected to participate in the management of the department, especially in ensuring that appropriate deputising arrangement(s) are made, when necessary, and supervising the day-to-day clinical work of the junior staff in the department.

The post-holders are encouraged to pursue research projects which will lead to publication of scientific papers.

The post-holders are expected to be committed to maintaining a high standard of note-keeping and communication with General Practitioners. He/she will be involved in preparing information for entry to the hospital's Clinical Information System and in preparing Discharge Summaries of patients under the care of the consultant for whom he/she is working at the time.

Any other duties commensurate with the grade which may be allocated from time to time.

Main duties of the job

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management and care given of patients

Day to day management of surgical patients under Consultant General Surgeon's care

To undertake theatre lists on surgical patients under the supervision of a Consultant General Surgeon

To be part of the 1 in 10 week on-call rota

Assisting with teaching and training of junior staff and medical students

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit

To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

  • Full GMC registration
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCS/FRCS or equivalent qualification

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Training and experience in general surgery including emergency general surgery.
  • Out of hours experience

Language Skills

Essential criteria
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
