The Medical Day Unit is a small, nurse-led unit, providing treatment for day patients from the Gastro, Endocrine, Haematology, Urology, Rheumatology, Dermatology and oncology  departments. This includes blood transfusions, intravenous infusions, bladder treatments and venesections- this not being a comprehensive list.

We liaise with consultants & parent teams about ongoing plans of care for patients & act as advocates within this process.

The unit is open Monday to Saturday   from 08:00- 17:00

Main duties of the job

  • Provide timely assessments and admission on arrival to the MDU 

  • Perform clinical skills including Venepuncture and Cannulation 

  • Perform regular observations and documentation of the patients care episode

  • Assist in re-booking future appointments

  •  Working alongside all other staff in the department and parent team to ensure high standards of care are provided 

    Working independently and unsupervised at times to manage own caseload of patients 

    Liaising with medical teams to plan and evaluate future treatments

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled band 5 staff nurse to join the busy and dynamic  Medical Day unit on a fixed term/secondment until January 2026.

The staff nurse will deliver a high level of care to a broad range of patients from various specialties. The role consists of performing frequent assessments of the patients, monitoring their response to treatment and escalating any signs of deterioration in a timely manner. The role allows exposure  to a broad range of treatments and interventions, often these are new and emerging treatments. 

The staff nurse will be expected to manage their own list of patients allocated to them and provide the care needed to that patient. 

Often patients will need time to understand their treatments so excellent communication skills is essential 

 

The successful candidate will be competent in Venepuncture and cannulation. Due to the shortness of the contract this is essential.

Essential criteria
  • Competent in venepuncture and cannulation
  • Competent in IV drug administration
Desirable criteria
  • Mentorship/ practise assessor

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work unsupervised at times
  • Experience of teamwork
  • Good IT skills and a knowledge of hospital software
  • Acute Hospital experince
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a nurse lead unit
