We are recruiting 'New to Care' Support Workers to join Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, on a 12 month training contract with progression opportunity to a substantive Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker role, if training and development is successfully completed.

Main duties of the job

Our Care Support Workers carry out assigned tasks involving direct patient care in support of and supervised by a Registered Nurse.  You will work as a valued member of the ward / department team, assisting with nursing procedures according to agreed policies.

As a Care Support Worker, you will play a key role in supporting patients, their families and the wider clinical team to provide high quality, compassionate care.  Your duties will include:

  • Supporting patients with activities of daily living such as personal cares, mobility and nutrition
  • Helping to maintain a safe clinical environment
  • Communicating effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
  • Assisting nursing and medical staff with basic clinical tasks

Our Care Support Workers are expected to work a combination of days, nights and weekends including Bank Holidays and Christmas Day.

  • Early – 07:15 to 15:15
  • Late – 12:15 to 20:15hrs
  • Night – 19:45hrs to 07:45hrs
  • Long Day – 07:15hrs to 20:15h

As part of the training contract the successful candidates will be expected to attend and participate in both classroom and ward / department based teachings. They must complete all mandatory and essential training as directed by the Trust, as well as the National Care Certificate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We provide you will all the training you need to provide outstanding care to patients. 

In your role you will be helping patients with:

  • their personal hygiene needs including bathing in the bed and in the bathroom
  • choosing meals from the menu and providing support with feeding
  • encouragement to drink regularly and recording fluid intake
  • dressing and undressing,
  • toileting and escorting them to and from the toilet
  • making their beds clean and comfortable.

The role of a Care Support Worker is essential on our wards and you will have the privilege to provide compassionate care and reassurance to our patients.
