Pre Operative Assessment Specialist Nurse/Practitioner

Job overview

This is a training post starting as Band 5 Nurse and upon completion of competencies will progress to Band 6 Specialist post. The post holder will assess patient’s fitness for surgery prior to elective surgery, & organise safe and timely preparation and coordination of clinics. 

The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordinating patient care and the surgical pathway and liaise appropriately with surgical teams and multidisciplinary staff.

Main duties of the job

The postholder is responsible for carrying out Nurse-led Pre-Operative Assessments for criteria specific patients, and ensuring that they are safe and suitably prepared for surgery. They will also support and assist in the development of the Unit to match the demands of elective care within the surgical directorate. The role is supported by specialist nursing team however some work will be carried out autonomously.

  • Have a thorough understanding and knowledge of patient note preparation & review and prepare patient notes for clinic in a timely manner ensuring these are available & ready for clinic, including seeking additional information from GP’s or other departments when required
  • Ensure effective working relationships and communications are maintaine
  • To direct clinical queries to the most appropriate perso
  • To be aware of and comply with HDFT policies and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Support appropriate Admission process for elective admissions. Optimise Bed utilisation and facilitate the most appropriate admissions process for patients
  • Assist in the development of staff across the team, i.e. care assistants and support workers to improve the care and service delivered to patients.
