Job overview

Consultant in Frailty with Specialist Interest in Stroke

1x full time vacancy available, option to appoint LTFT, with retention premia

Plus Stroke on-call rota

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT) are looking to appoint a Stroke & Frailty Consultant to join our established teams. All newly appointed consultants are expected to support an on-call rota. The post is advertised as full time but LTFT applicants are welcome to apply.

The development of Frailty services is a priority for the Trust, incorporating its Acute site and Community services. As a member of the Acute Frailty Network, we are embedding specialist geriatrician input within the Emergency Department and Same Day Emergency Care service, whilst also supporting Home First approach via our Virtual Frailty Ward.

In Harrogate we are lucky to have health and social care partners working together to improve care provision for adults in our locality via HARA (Harrogate and Rural Alliance) which brings together our commissioners, physical and mental health providers, primary care colleagues, and the County Council.

Main duties of the job

You will be joining a dynamic and enthusiastic team comprising Consultants in Stroke, Neurology and Frailty with combined skills and special interests in acute care, community rehabilitation, movement disorders, orthogeriatrics, continence, dementia, falls and polypharmacy.

The Acute Frailty Unit provides a daily post-take ward round on weekdays and strengthens our input into the expanding Supported Discharge Service and Community Care teams, to reinforce our Home First ethos. All Frailty inpatient areas are supported by junior doctors and Advanced Clinical Practitioners, as well as a diverse and highly valued multidisciplinary team, who share our passion for delivering high quality person-centred care. You would have the opportunity within your job plan to develop your own interests.

You will also work closely with colleagues in acute and general medicine, and in the Emergency Department. The organisation of our DGH services has been under continual review post-COVID but the department have shown resilience, flexibility and compassion in the way that we provide acute services and strive towards forward-thinking models of delivery.

Working for our organisation

The Spa town of Harrogate is surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales, with excellent facilities in the area for sports and outdoor activities.  There is a healthy nightlife with a number of popular bars and restaurants within the town centre and the city hosts a number of annual events such as The Yorkshire Show, The Annual Flower Show and several sporting events.

Major cities Leeds and York are conveniently close.  The area also offers a choice of outstanding local schools.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are a provider of undergraduate medical school education for the University of Leeds and have a thriving research community. This is an exciting opportunity for a new, or experienced geriatrician to join our team!

This post will attract a retention premium of £10,000 upon completion of one year’s service, £15,000 upon completion of two years’ service and a further £15,000 payment upon completion of three years’ service.
