Job overview

To carry out the preparation and cooking of meals for patients and staff, ensuring that high standards of quality and food safety are maintained at all times. Post holders will ensure a high standard of service delivery in relation to catering service functions. Post holders will be required to work with high regard to food safety legislation and in accordance with the departments HACCP procedures. Post holder should be compliant with budgets and nutrition standards and to ensure good quality food for patients’ staff and visitors.

Main duties of the job

1. Organise and plan own work according to work schedules and rotas

2. Prepare and cook food according to planned menu, using standard recipes at the

prescribed times, including the provision of special diets.

3. Exercise portion control following recipes guidelines achieving correct nutritional values

4. Prepare food for patients when required. Work with the catering team Mangers to assist

in any referral of special diets from Dietetic department.

5. Assist in ordering of kitchen supplies in liaison with the store’s Manager and Head chef.

6. Assist in the preparation, weighing, portioning of all food.

7. The employee is expected to be familiar and trained with the relevant hygiene and safety legislation relating to kitchen areas and attend relevant refresher training arranged by the department.

8. Ensure that working areas and equipment are kept in a clean, hygienic state and that good hygienic practises are observed in cooking process as stated in the health service Catering hygiene schedule. Instruct the kitchen porter to oversee areas of concerns regarding cleaning and maintenance.

9. Adhere to all assured safe catering practises.

10. Help in welfare and training of catering assistants and students and in the induction of new staff

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 2 or equivalent Food
  • Hygiene level 2 certificate
  • Previous experience of working within a catering environment.
Desirable criteria
  • HACCP level 2 qualification
