Job overview
SHYPS Cellular Pathology Department have a vacancy for a Secretary to join our busy support team, located on the Hull Royal Infirmary site. This role is a great opportunity for a capable secretary with excellent organisational and communication skills to contribute to vital, patient focussed support to the acute Trusts in the SHYPS network by providing a comprehensive secretarial service to Pathology Consultants and their teams.
Selection will be by interview and a short skills assessment which will be held face to face on Wednesday 25 June 2025.
Main duties of the job
The Cellular Pathology secretaries are part of a wider administrative team delivering in a fast paced and time sensitive environment. Each secretary supports one or more clinical speciality.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the management and tracking of pathology cases and preparation of information for weekly MDT meetings, providing secretarial support to Consultant Pathologists including copy and audio typing, liaison with the Lab and clinical teams to progress cases, managing cases referred into and out of the service for specialist work.
To maintain delivery across all specialities Medical Secretaries provide cover to other areas where needed. Where applicable they will also provide day-to-day work supervision of Assistant Medical Secretaries, Administrators and Typists within the team

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE English Language, Grade C or above (or equivalent)
- Typing skills – OCR III (or equivalent e.g. RSA III )
- Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable criteria
- ECDL
- Qualification or appropriate training in Customer Service
- AMSPAR
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- In depth knowledge of office processes and procedures
- Thorough knowledge of medical terminology
- Experience of using a variety of IT applications, including Microsoft Office
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum 2 years secretarial/senior administrative experience
- Experience of working in a customer focused environment
Desirable criteria
- Experience of staff supervision
