People for Patients. Our People, our Patients, our Priority

Job overview

Now is an exciting time to join us at Scarborough Hospital. We have recently completed a £47 million redevelopment project to transform our Acute, Urgent & Emergency Medical services. We are seeking Specialty Doctors to join our dynamic Emergency Department team.

Our new Urgent & Emergency Care Centre (UECC) facility, which opened on 1st May 2025, is a pioneering, multi-functional clinical space that integrates Emergency Medicine, Resuscitation, Urgent Care, Frailty, Same Day Emergency Care, and short-stay services into a single, holistic footprint. This innovative model promotes a ‘working without walls’ approach across specialties, supported by dedicated radiology and over 3000 sqm of flexible clinical space.

Above the UECC, a state-of-the-art Critical Care and Enhanced Care Unit has also been developed, further enhancing acute care on the Yorkshire Coast.

Main duties of the job

As a senior doctor in the ED team, you will:

  • Act as the responsible emergency physician on-site after hours.
  • Manage acutely unwell patients.
  • Supervise junior doctors and advanced clinical practitioners.
  • Coordinate patient flow with support from the on-call ED consultant.

The rota complies with the new Specialty Doctor contract and includes 1.25 PAs/week of protected SPA time, some of which is flexible. You’ll be encouraged to lead quality improvement projects and take on departmental leadership roles.

We offer a structured CESR programme, with opportunities to join after one year in post, subject to review.

Working for our organisation

We see approximately 70000 non-elective patients annually and provide on-site services that cover the majority of medical and surgical services (with the exception of those usually provided at a tertiary centre). We have a well-equipped and very active postgraduate education department on site, and are involved in extensive training activities for students of all disciplines including Hull York Medical School.

We see the full range of patients at Scarborough, including children, and we have recently upgraded our helipad to enable use 24/7. We are a Trauma Unit and have links with the local Major Trauma Centre in Hull.

Where are we?

Scarborough was the country’s first seaside resort, and remains amongst the UK’s favourite and popular locations. We are on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and have excellent opportunities for outdoor activities, both on the water, on our beaches and inland. The town is well connected to the road and rail network with London being less than 3 hours away by train.

In joining the Trust, you will have access to a wide range of staff benefits including health and wellbeing support, finance schemes and discounts. There is also a competitive relocation package of up to £18,000. To support your learning and development you will be entitled to a study leave budget of £3,000 across three years, along with support from our learning and development team.  More information can be found on the Trust’s website in the ‘Working for Us’ section.
