Job overview

Are you an experienced occupational therapist with a passion for empowering people to return and remain in work? Do you want to make a significant difference to the lives of people living with coronary heart disease?

The Cardiac rehab team have been successful in securing NHS England funding for a one-year, fixed term, post for a Band 7 Occupational therapist (OT) within York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop, deliver, and embed vocational rehabilitation as part of the cardiac rehabilitation service offer.

Working 3 days a week, primarily based in York, you will have an office and clinic space in our friendly and well-established Cardiac rehab team at Clementhorpe Health Centre. However, there will be a requirement to work and transport yourself across various sites, including home / workplace visits.

Good quality supervision and CPD are essential to the well-being of our staff, and we make this a priority. You will have access to supervision and support from an experienced Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Occupational Therapy Professional Lead, AHP senior manager and cardiac rehab team leads.

Our Trust has an ongoing commitment to flexible and hybrid working, so may include some working from home where appropriate.

Main duties of the job

  • To assess, treat and provide, highly specialist Occupational Therapy (OT) -led 1:1 vocational clinics and groups for patients with highly complex cardiac conditions in the cardiac rehabilitation community setting.
  • To complete detailed holistic assessments of individual capacity and workplace requirements. Set SMART goals and create realistic, graded return-to-work plans based on OT task analysis.

  • To use a health coaching approach to empower patients to self-manage long-term condition(s) and related symptoms.

  •  To provide vocational-focused interventions aimed at those already experiencing difficulties at work or getting into paid employment and those wishing to return to work.

  • To advise on reasonable adjustments to the workplace, equipment needs and redeployment option; completing a AHP Fit Note where required.

  • To work collaboratively with the cardiac rehabilitation MDT to improve the vocational rehabilitation offer to people with coronary heart disease by upskilling providing training, and advice to MDT colleagues.

Person specification

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience in specialist occupational therapy role,including the management of a range of specialist conditions, with substantial evidence of additional knowledge acquired through formal and informal clinical supervision
  • Evidence of ability to lead and act as an authority on the management of complex clinical presentations in specialist area (Cardiac rehab/cardiology)
  • Significant experience of delivering clinical treatment within specialist area (Cardiac rehab/cardiology).
  • In-depth understanding of current issues in health care Knowledge and understanding of Occupational Therapy Standards of Professional Practice
Desirable criteria
  • Masters level study within relevant area of practice or research and evidence-based practice

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • HCPC Registered Occupational Therapist
  • Degree or diploma in pre-registration Occupational Therapy
  • Post graduate qualification relevant to post or willingness to complete
Desirable criteria
  • Vocational rehabilitation training and experience
