Job overview

Within the Trust we are part of Surgery Care Group, which includes most surgical specialties.

 

We have a Clinical Director responsible for the Theatres, Anaesthetics and Critical Care directorate (TACC) across the Trust supported by Lead Clinicians for Intensive Care, Pain, Anaesthetics and Theatres.

 

Surgical services are located principally at two acute hospitals, York and Scarborough.


The successful candidate will join a team of 19 Consultants in Critical Care cross site. The base hospital will be York but there will be an expectation that some job planned work will take place in Scarborough Hospital.

 

 

At York Hospital there is a 22 bedded Critical Care Unit with staffing to support up to 13 level     3 patients at any one time.

The unit is staffed by two consultant intensivists during the day time with one on call overnight.

Main duties of the job

In York there are 12 operating theatres in our main suite (including one dedicated to vascular imaging assisted work). We have a dedicated day unit with 6 theatres and an ophthalmology operating area with two theatres. These are supported by two Post-Anaesthetic Care Units (PACUs). There are also two separate obstetric theatres.

 

The post can be offered as a pure intensive care job or a split role with time dedicated to anaesthetics.

From those who have a background in EM / Acute medicine / Renal / Respiratory the role is advertised as a single stream job but job planned time in dual speciality can be explored.

Individual job plans will be discussed and finalised with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director on appointment and will become operational on commencement. All job plans are agreed in line with the Trust’s Job Planning Principles. Job plans will be reviewed annually in line with appraisals. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultant’s typical working pattern, duties and responsibilities. It will cover all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education, managerial responsibilities, and external commitments.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical Degree
  • GMC Registration and License to practise without restriction
  • Entry on Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine OR Within 6 months of completion of UK ICM training programme with expected entry onto the Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine

Clinical Competence

Essential criteria
  • Evidence can work independently at consultant level
  • Evidence of experience and competence at managing critically unwell children
  • Evidence of competence in line with Stage 3 FICM curriculum
  • Evidence and examples to show can work under pressure
  • Evidence of advanced resuscitation skills
  • Evidence and examples can manage complex clinical prioritisation decision making

Leadership and Teamwork

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of leadership experience and skills
  • Evidence of engagement in clinical governance
  • Evidence can work in multi-disciplinary team

Quality Improvement and Research

Essential criteria
