Job overview

We are delighted to offer the opportunity for a highly motivated and well organised individual to join the team of Medical Secretaries within the Gastroenterology Team at York Hospital.

This varied secretarial role will support Gastroenterology Consultants with communication, administrative and secretarial tasks. The postholder will also provide key support to our patients by assisting with their queries, concerns and engaging with the wider clinical team and other key stakeholders.

Main duties of the job

Typing of clinics and general correspondence, complex diary management and provision of patient data.  Dealing with correspondence from patients, GPs and other sources, including the scheduling of appointments, to ensure referral to treatment targets are met.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, and relevant secretarial/admin experience. Together with proficient typing skills, particularly in audiotyping and have experience of digital dictation. Knowledge of medical terminology would be advantageous.

To be successful in the post you must be well organised, able to prioritise your own workload in a fast-paced environment and work independently to meet strict deadlines.  

We require an efficient and resilient team player who upholds the Trust Values and has a flexible approach to work, with a willingness to learn and meet the challenges of a fast-paced service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE English Language, Grade C or above (or equivalent)
  • Word processing skills – OCR III (or equivalent e.g. RSA III)
  • Typing skills - OCR III (or equivalent e.g. RSA III)
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years secretarial/administrative experience
  • Experience of using a variety of IT applications, including Microsoft Office
Desirable criteria
  • NHS Experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate with people who are upset and angry and deal with situation effectively
  • Proficient audio typist with the ability to accurately transcribe complex digital dictation and type complex medical information whilst subject to frequent interruption
  • Ability to explain complex information to staff, patients and others as required
  • Ability to be flexible and to adapt to new demands

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Thorough knowledge of medical terminology
