Job overview

York Hospital Pharmacy department are looking to recruit a well-motivated, forward-thinking professional to join our friendly team.

You will need to have excellent communication skills and enjoy working as part of a large multi-disciplinary team. You will need to be friendly, approachable, adaptable, flexible, willing to learn new skills and be committed to continuous professional development.

You will need to hold a recognised Pharmacy Technician qualification (BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences, NVQ level 3 or equivalent) and be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. We are recruiting Pharmacy Technicians ideally with hospital experience, but welcome applications from community technicians.

Also, we welcome applications from those who are newly qualified or students due to qualify in the next 3 months. 

A full induction and training will be provided to the successful candidate

Core service hours are Monday to Friday 08:45 – 17:15 and you will contribute to the weekend rota (roughly 1 in 8) and bank holiday rota (roughly 1 per year).

Main duties of the job

Your role as an MMT will involve:

  • Completing medicines reconciliations on patients ensuring the inpatient record is a true reflection of what the patient was taking prior to admission
  • Assessing Patient’s Own Drugs (PODs) and checking their suitability for use
  • Ordering medication for patients via the dispensary to ensure patients doses aren’t missed
  • Counselling patients and/or carers on medication including the supply of appropriate leaflets
  • Supporting the timely discharge of patients
  • Participating in the dispensary to support with Accuracy Checking and/or dispensing duties and unlicensed medication releasing 
  • Acting as a role model to junior staff members as well as supervising, providing support and training
  • Participating in audits to support service improvement

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences / QCF Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent.
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
Desirable criteria
  • QCF Level 4 or above in a qualification relevant to the post.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least one year, post-qualification experience.
  • Supervision and mentoring of junior staff.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication & interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Participated in the implementation of changes in service, products and / or systems.
  • Problem solving.
  • Able to use a range of computer programmes relevant to the post
  • Audit of practice and / or of the impact of a change in the way the service is delivered.
