Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a recently qualified Speech & Language Therapist to join our friendly team in York Hospital.
Do you want to join a forward thinking SLT team working across a range of settings within the surgical team, working with adults with acquired swallowing and communication difficulties?
We are passionate about evidence-based, high quality care for our patients, and if you are too, we could offer a supportive and exciting role for a new or experienced Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist.
You would be supported by a team manager, a professional lead, clinical leads, Band 6 Senior SLTs, and have access to peer support from Band 5 colleagues.
This role is part of a rotation where there is an opportunity to gain experience within the medical Speech & Language Therapy team (including Stroke and Dysphagia)
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be joining an SLT team with a strong commitment to integrated working and quality improvement. There will be excellent training and development opportunities, scope to lead in areas of service development, as well as a robust supervision and appraisal system.
You will have the opportunity to work alongside highly specialist staff and integrate into a variety of multi-disciplinary teams .This may include inpatients, voice/ENT and Head & Neck Cancer, as well as out patient opportunities as your skills develop.
As a team we have an established SLT led Videofluoroscopy clinic and offer evidenced based therapies, such as expiratory muscle strength training, so opportunities to shape your learning and clinical practice will also be available.

Education, Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Degree in Speech & Language Therapy
- HCPC Registered Speech and Language Therapist
Desirable criteria
- Practice placement supervisor qualification
- Evidence of relevant CPD activities including reflection
Experience and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Experience in completing assessment, clinical reasoning, delivering clinical interventions and evaluating outcomes within speech and language therapy (could be within student placements).
- Evidence of reflective practice from work experience or student placements.
- Evidence of robust knowledge base relevant to role that applies to the management of a range of conditions.
Desirable criteria
- NHS experience through placement and/or employment work
- Experience in managing a range of clinical presentations
- Experience of training/supporting others (including students) within speech and language therapy
Skills & Attributes
Essential criteria
- Ability to organise and prioritise
- Ability to work as an effective member of multidisciplinary team
- Ability to demonstrate appropriate engagement withothers and understanding of the impact of good and poor communication
