Outpatient Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse - Breast Department

Job overview

We are looking for a part time (30 hours) band 6 Clinic Deputy Sister as a permanent post for the Breast Service.

As part of this post you will support the Nursing Leads of the Breast unit and Lead the clinic nursing team in the  delivery of high quality care. This role will include coordinating the Breast Out-Patient team and supporting the efficient running of the department, leading on and providing holistic, high quality, patient-focused, safe and effective patient care.

The post-holder will need to communicate effectively across the multi-disciplinary team and provide strong leadership skills, acting as a senior professional role model and sharing skills and knowledge as well as effective and responsible use of Trust resources and engagement in both local and strategic change management. Monitor clinical outcomes and the patient experience, and play an active role in achieving positive patient outcomes by participating in and collecting data through audit.

Main duties of the job

Lead the Breast Clinic Team, ensuring they are able to deliver safe, effective high-quality care to Breast patients.

  • Coordinate and participate in the smooth running of the Breast clinics 
  • Practice effective communication and work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team
  • Provide information and support patients and families, aiding informed decision-making. 
  • Act as a chaperone and patient advocate.
  • Assess the physical and psychological needs of patients referring to appropriate health care professionals.
  • Competently assess and manage breast and plastic surgical wounds.
  • Provide clinical supervision.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Safeguarding both adults and children. Escalating when necessary.
  • Ensure NMC standards are maintained for record keeping and medicines management.
  • Lead on service improvement
  • Participate in the recruitment and retention of staff 
  • Perform appraisals  for the team
  • Complete off duty for the nursing team
  • Participate in risk management (Datix)
  • Deal with complaints and PALS concerns
  • Actively participate in team meetings
  • Support the Senior nursing team in the Breast Unit
  • Lead on new practice and service development using patient feedback for quality improvement
  • Create and sustain a teaching environment leading to evidence-based practice development.  Ensure team practice competencies are maintained  (Compassly).
  • Act as a mentor/supervisor to staff within the unit.

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Educated to Degree level of Nursing or an equivalent level of education, training, or experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Mentor or Leadership Qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience within an acute setting in a hospital environment
  • Enthusiasm for learning and a commitment to ongoing professional development
  • Awareness and understanding of current issues within nursing, midwifery, and the wider NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Breast and Plastic Surgical Nursing

Skills

Essential criteria
  • The ability to foster a positive learning culture
  • The ability to demonstrate accuracy in personal record keeping and adhere to information governance regulations regarding storage and sharing of data.
  • The ability to communicate with patients and their families/carers during a highly stressful time, able to alter communication strategies dependent on the situation and the patient's status
  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure provision of a high-quality nursing service
  • The ability to organise, prioritise and adjust own workload in relation to the priorities of the department
  • Able to allocate and delegate workload responsibly and mentor the work of others, providing clinical supervision to junior staff
