Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) HCPC Registered with experience of Haematology and Blood Transfusion

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic HCPC registered specialist  BMS with experience of working in Haematology and Transfusion, preferably within the NHS.  Candidates should have completed their IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology with Transfusion Practice.

The post holder will be required to actively participate in the 24/7, 365 rota  following completion of in-house training and competency assessment. 

Applicants will need to possess good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will rotate through all sections of the Haematology laboratory. This includes Routine Haematology, Coagulation, Morphology and Blood Transfusion.  The role involves performing a variety of complex analytical procedures.

 You will demonstrate skills and knowledge required including the safe handling of hazardous chemical and biological materials.

 You must be able to concentrate for extended time periods to successfully complete complex investigations.

 You will be encouraged to contribute to the future development of the Haematology service.

Our department is equipped with an automated track system consisting of Sysmex analysers in both Haematology and Coagulation. The department offers in-house haemoglobinopathy and specialist haemostasis testing.

The department is accredited to UKAS ISO 15189 and is registered with the Institute of Biomedical Sciences as a training laboratory for pre- and post-registration training.

Educations, Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC Registration with IBMS accredited BSc
  • Holds an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology and or Transfusion
  • Must be HCPC registered
Desirable criteria
  • Hold a MSC or equivalent in a suitable subject

Knowledge/experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Post-registration laboratory experience (in relevant discipline)
  • Demonstrate active participation in a quality management system to meet regulatory/accreditation standards.
  • Being able to work as a member of a team
  • Safe handling biological material
  • Manual dexterity to manipulate samples for processing
  • Knowledge of laboratory related H&S
  • Knowledge of confidentiality requirements
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstration of NHS experience in a Haematology and Transfusion Laboratory

  • Good organisational skills/Able to prioritise workload
