Biomedical Scientist Haematology

Band 5

Job overview

Following internal promotion a vacancy has opened up for a band 5 HCPC registered biomedical scientist in the haematology and blood transfusion department at Kettering General Hospital. This role will enable the postholder to rotate through haematology, coagulation, and blood transfusion performing a wide range of investigations in a busy pathology department.  Candidates should have post-registration experience in a haematology and transfusion laboratory.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist providing scientific services to patients as an aid to clinical diagnosis. The successful candidate will be required to undertake a wide range of complex analytical procedures, performing a range of manual, semi-automated and automated tests using scientific knowledge and experience to comment upon and validate results in line with ISO 15189:2022. Additionally staff must work safely with potentially hazardous samples in line with laboratory COSHH and risk assessments.

This post requires use of previous experience and developing new skills in line with the departmental training and competency framework. CPD is encouraged as part of this role.

The department operates 24/7 and is very busy so the postholder must be able to concentrate for extended time periods to successfully complete investigations and report results within laboratory turnaround times. Participation in this rota is required after suitable training. The postholder will be expected to be conversant with pathology IT systems and different types of automated analysers. Experience in blood film morphology is required.
