Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Consultant Breast Radiographer to join our dedicated team based at Kettering General Hospital.

We provide both NHS breast screening and symptomatic services for North Northamptonshire. Our screening population is approximately 51,000 women, with an anticipated population growth of approx 8-10% over the next 10 years.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A Master's Degree in Breast Imaging and HCPC registration
  • Extensive experience in breast ultrasound, clinical examination, interventional procedures and film reading
  • Proven ability to lead, teach and innovate within a multidisciplinary team environment
  • A passion for patient-centred care and continuous improvement

Our unit regularly performs Contrast Enhanced Mammography (CEM) and we are working towards delivering a  comprehensive CEM biopsy service. Prior experience of CEM is advantageous but not essential.

A Masters level qualification in reporting breast MRI is desirable.

 

Main duties of the job

 This role carries significant clinical autonomy and leadership responsibility, including:

  • Acting as a Responsible Assessor for the NHS Breast Screening Programme, demonstrating sound knowledge of NHSBSP QA guidelines and KPI's.
  • Leading MDT discussions and presenting complex cases
  • Supervising trainees and advanced practitioners
  • Driving research, audit, and service development initiatives
  • Contributing to strategic decisions and clinical governance
  • Participation in self audit and reflection on personal image interpretation performance.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Masters Degree in Breast Imaging to include image interpretation, clinical examination, breast ultrasound, interventional procedures and research.
  • Certificate of competence in Mammography
Desirable criteria
  • Breast MRI reporting qualification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidenced experience of NHSBSP reporting, with annual Performs participation and reflection
  • Demonstrable knowledge of NHSBSP Quality Assurance Guidelines and key performance indicators
  • Knowledge and experience of the role of Responsible Assessor
  • Understanding of Right Results in delivering a breast screening service
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the requirements of the Very High Risk breast screening cohort
  • Knowledge of the application of CEM in breast imaging

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of autonomously performing breast ultrasound and ultrasound guided biopsy
  • A minimum of 2 years experience as an image reporter in breast screening
  • Experience of leading 2ww clinics
  • Experience of performing Magseed and wire localisations, both u/s and stereotactically guided
  • Experience of audit and research pertinent to the role
  • Evidence based approach to management of complex cases
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of reporting CEM
  • Experience of teaching and mentoring clinical and practical skills
  • Experience of leadership within the Breast MDT
