Patient Safety and Risk Midwife

Band 7

Job overview

Patient Safety and Risk Midwife Band 7 – 15 Hours per week

Do you aspire to deliver the Best Possible Maternity Care every time? That is the approach to Maternity Services across University Hospitals of Northamptonshire.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced midwife with a passion for patient safety to join our established risk team within maternity for 15 hours per week. The post holder will provide caring, respectful and accountable leadership to support the delivery of safe, high‑quality maternity care. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, they will act as a positive role model for midwifery practice in line with the NMC Code and Trust values, promote effective communication, and support staff to identify, manage and reduce clinical and non‑clinical risk. They will champion patient safety, promote openness and learning, and ensure compliance with the Duty of Candour.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the delivery of clinical governance, quality, safety and risk management across the Directorate. They will lead and support governance systems, work plans and patient safety improvement initiatives aligned with Trust and national priorities, ensuring learning from incidents and reviews is shared and embedded into practice. This includes supporting and advising staff on incident reporting and investigation, analysing risk and incident data, chairing and coordinating key governance forums, supporting external investigations, and contributing to the Trust Risk Register and assurance processes.

The post holder will work closely with the Perinatal Safety Matrons, Directorate leaders and corporate teams to provide expert advice, support action planning and monitor progress against agreed objectives. They will participate in a clinical escalation rota, providing senior professional leadership and decision‑making to maintain patient safety and service continuity, and will take responsibility for their own development through regular appraisal and ongoing awareness of national developments and best practice.

The Patient Safety & Risk Midwife supports the promotion of a proactive quality and safety culture within the Family Health Directorate. The post holder is responsible for coordinating and developing systems for incident reporting, risk management and regulatory compliance, including CQC Fundamental Standards and Duty of Candour.
