Theatre Porter Supervisor

Band 3

Job overview

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Theatre Porter Supervisor to become an integral part of our peri‑operative team. In this role, you will work across all theatre areas, supporting the delivery of a safe, efficient, and high‑quality service.

With the support of senior line management, you will oversee the day‑to‑day supervision of the Theatre Porter Team. This includes managing staff rotas, coordinating annual leave, allocating staff to work areas, supporting sickness and absence processes, and ensuring compliance with statutory and mandatory training. You will also play a key role in maintaining ongoing competency within the team and fostering effective collaboration to support safe patient flow and theatre efficiency.

Your responsibilities will include reporting any equipment deficits, breakages, faults, or sterility concerns promptly to the Team Leader or Clinical Coordinator. You will ensure the safe transfer of clinical specimens to the appropriate departments, following Trust protocols and completing all required documentation. You will also carry out routine and emergency cleaning of theatre areas in line with Theatre Standards and provide hands‑on portering support when staffing shortages arise.

You will be expected to identify, report, and support the analysis of actual or potential adverse events using the Trust’s Datix Clinical Incident Reporting system.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide day‑to‑day supervision and immediate line management to the Theatre Porter Team, ensuring safe and effective service delivery.
  • Coordinate staff rotas, including allocation to theatre areas, annual leave
planning, and management of sickness and absence.
  • Monitor staff performance, mandatory training compliance, and ongoing
    competency, escalating concerns where appropriate.
  • Support the induction, development, and mentoring of new and existing staff.
  • Promote a positive, professional working culture aligned with Trust values and behaviours.
  • Oversee the safe and timely transfer of patients to and from theatres, recovery, wards, and other clinical areas.
  • Ensure portering support is aligned with theatre lists, clinical priorities, and operational demands.
  • Step in to provide hands‑on portering duties during staff shortages,
    emergencies, or peak activity periods.
  • Coordinate the movement of equipment, trolleys, and clinical items to support theatre efficiency and patient flow.
  • Maintain effective communication with Theatre Managers, Team Leaders, and the wider multidisciplinary team
