Consultant In Emergency Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Trosolwg o'r swydd

It is an exciting time to be joining our team, we have recently opened a brand new adjacent Paediatric Emergency Department and we are training our second cohort of CESR trainees in our own training programme run by a CESR Consultant.

Last year the Emergency Department (ED) managed over 115,000 attendances, of which approximately 20% were children, 25% were brought by ambulance, and 30% were admitted to hospital. The department’s achievements have been recognised at a number of levels:

·      CQC: Rated Good for Urgent and emergency services, 2019 and 2024. The trust was rated good 2024.

·      CQC: Positive case study in national CQC 2017 State of Care report

·      First UK hospital to reaccredit for Pathway to Excellence, an American initiative recognising positive practice.

The Emergency Department is centred around an initial assessment area which has recently been upgraded to include monitors in all bays. The ED has benefited from the Trust’s focus on improving Urgent Care services, and investment which has led to improved facilities and environment for treating patients of all ages. This includes our flagship Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) area adapted for frail patients or those with delirium and/ or dementia.

The most critically unwell patients have also benefited from the redevelopment of our Resuscitation Room. This area comprises seven rooms and two bays, including dedicated trauma, paediatric and neonatal, isolation and end of life rooms.

The clinical work comprises the receipt, resuscitation, initial treatment and diagnosis of undifferentiated emergency attendees presenting 24hours per day to a modern emergency department.  You will provide supervision for resident clinical staff working in the ED during shop floor duties, and flexibility during working hours to further support the department if required.  There are regular consultant-led ED safety rounds to ensure that all patients in the department  have a clear management plan in place at all times, as well as a focus on comfort and dignity.

You will be supported in developing and maintaining your professional clinical, educational, and academic interests.

Management duties may include organisation and facilitation of teaching (including simulation teaching), attendance at internal and external committees, staff recruitment and appointment, and the continuation and development of clinical governance, audit and quality improvement projects.

The Consultants as a group, in conjunction with the Specialist Registrars in the Department, organise and take part in teaching programmes for junior medical staff, medical students, nurses and paramedics who train in the department.  Various other ad hoc teaching arrangements may be made through personal contacts.  Medical students from Leicester are seconded to the ED throughout the year, while some also undertake electives in Pre-hospital and Emergency Medicine in the spring.
