Locum Consultant Obstetrician (special interest in Fetal Medicine)

Consultant

Job overview

This is an excellent opportunity for a locum Consultant Obstetrician with an interest in Fetal Medicine, to join the existing team of 12 Obstetricians.  This is a fixed term locum contract but work is ongoing to secure substantive posts soon.

It is essential that the post-holder holds the MRCOG (UK) or an equivalent qualification and be on the GMC specialist register or will obtain a relevant CCT/CESR(CP) within 6 months of interview.  In addition, applicants must have an ATSM/SITM in fetal medicine or equivalent experience in the assessment and management of high-risk pregnancies and fetal concerns.  This should include obstetric ultrasound skills appropriate to a consultant working in a district general hospital.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will work clinically as a full-time Obstetrician with a job plan that focusses on fetal medicine but with regular commitment to labour ward, elective caesarean section lists and antenatal clinic work.

The postholder will provide consultant-led care for women with high-risk pregnancies and fetal concerns that can be appropriately managed within a district general hospital setting. They will work closely with specialist midwives, sonographers, neonatologists and other members of the multidisciplinary team, with timely referral to the regional tertiary fetal medicine centre when required.

The successful candidate will join a team of four consultants with an interest in fetal medicine and fetal health. They will contribute to the ongoing development of the local fetal medicine service and to collaborative work across University Hospitals of Northamptonshire.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

·         Provide consultant-led care within the local Fetal Medicine Unit.

·         Assess and manage high-risk pregnancies and fetal concerns appropriate to a district general hospital.

·         Work collaboratively with specialist midwives, sonographers, neonatologists and allied health professionals.

·         Liaise with and refer to regional tertiary fetal medicine and fetal cardiology services when appropriate.

·         Contribute to multidisciplinary meetings and support continuity of care for women and families.

·         Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

·         Support the teaching, training and supervision of junior doctors, medical students and other healthcare professionals

·         Contribute to the wider obstetric service, including labour ward, antenatal clinics and elective caesarean section lists.
