Job overview

This Senior Clinical Fellow (SCF) in Rheumatology post is a fixed term replacement for an ST4 and above Specialty Registrar position from the date of appointment until the start of August 2026.

The SCF will work in the Department of Rheumatology, Northampton General Hospital (NGH) and will be required to carry out the same duties as a registrar in full training.  This is not an official training post, but the appointee will be entitled to attend the training meetings within the department.

The SCF will work within a team of 6 Consultants, one other registrar in training, an IMT3 trainee and two FY2 Resident doctors to provide a clinical service for NGH and its population.  Duties will include outpatient care, review of ward referral and referrals from the ED and SDEC.  There may also be duties in terms of teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level depending on the experience of the appointee.

The appointee will hold the full MRCP and will have had experience of clinical rheumatology at CT2 level or equivalent.  Clinical expertise in rheumatology, and good communication skills will be required.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties

The SCF will at present work in rheumatology clinics and on medical wards to see rheumatology patients.   They will also be working with the Consultant Rheumatologist on call for the week in reviewing urgent outpatient and inpatient referrals. Subject to relevant experience you may also be asked to undertake General Internal Medicine on call out of hours duties at registrar level.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Research
Good opportunities for clinical research exist in Northampton. We have an active research portfolio covering many areas of rheumatology and you will be encouraged to participate. There is an active Research and Innovation Department and there is good support for the 
NIHR supported Associate Principal Investigator programme. Registrars will participate in research projects with a view to presenting such work at meetings of Learned Societies and followed by publications. 


Clinical Governance
An understanding of clinical governance issues is an essential part of training. The trainee will be expected to undertake and present audit projects, and to be involved in clinical governance activities. 


Postgraduate Meetings
There are regular Postgraduate meetings and ‘teaching days’ are provided locally. Attendance at regional (Regional Registrar Training Days) and national meetings (British Society for Rheumatology meeting) will be encouraged.


Teaching
The teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students is also an essential requirement of the post. All postholders will be expected to take part in ward based clinical teaching, as well as formal lecture-based teaching.


Management Training
Attendance at appropriate courses will be encouraged.

  • Full GMC Registration and a license to practice
  • MB ChB or equivalent
