Job overview
We are pleased to be offering Senior Clinical fellow posts in our newly built Paediatric Emergency Department as part of an expansion of our team.
It is important to understand these posts are for those with EM and /or Paediatric experience and involve a leadership role within the department, the personal specification outlines the criteria we are looking for. The successful applicant will begin work at a level commensurate with previous experience, likely to be at ST3-6 (registrar) level. The post holder must be registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practice.
This is not a HEE recognised post, and you will not receive a National Training Number or a CCT.
Main duties of the job
This role has been newly created job for our PED. The successful candidate will work as a Senior in PED along with the ACCS/GP trainees, ACP and Junior clinical fellows.
Our Senior Clinical Fellows work on the registrar tier of the rota. You will be expected to lead PED and work along with other ED Registrars overnight.
Non-clinical work includes a range of activities such as teaching (both attending and delivering), QI and audit work. Dedicated office space is provided for non-clinical work.
Successful candidates will be allocated a supervising FRCEM Consultant. The candidate will be supported to develop the skills and knowledge in PED by attending relevant courses and educational events. ED Consultant is available to support the candidate from 0800-2300 during the shifts and ST4+ Registrars are allocated to work along with the candidates during the night.
If you are new to the NHS there will also be a period of structured shadowing available.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are excited to be advertising a number of Senior Clinical Fellow posts, based in our Paediatric Emergency Department at Northampton General Hospital.
The post is newly created for our Paediatric Emergency Department, and is designed for candidates who are working at the level of senior decision maker in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, or who are ready to take this responsibility and wish to advance their career in this exciting specialty.

Job Purpose
The purpose of this post is twofold:
- To provide middle grade cover for the PED.
- To provide a supportive environment for the motivated candidate to gain middle grade experience in PEM and progress their career in EM or Paediatrics.
Job description an responsibilities:
The PED is adjacent to our main ED, separated only by swipe access partition and well supported by the team of Consultants , Middle grades and Resident Doctors working in main ED. Our ED rota is designed to have 24/7 cover with Registrars or Specialty Doctors equivalent to ST4+.
Post holders in this grade will participate in the middle grade rota. Duties within the Paediatric Emergency Department will cover the whole range of clinical responsibility for children with emergency problems from minor injuries to major trauma, and minor illnesses through to the critically unwell. You will be expected to lead major cases in our resuscitation room. You will supervise the ACCS trainees/GP trainees/ Junior clinical fellows who work in PED. You will work along with our highly experienced PED nurses to prioritise the sick children and support to achieve the ED national standards. You will work with the nights ED Registrars in the main ED and support the team to maintain safety in ED.
There is extended consultant cover from 08:00 – 23:00 weekdays, and 10:00-22:00 in weekends & bank holidays. Outside these hours, consultant cover is provided via an on-call system and consultants will attend the department if required.
We would encourage the post holder to complete workplace based assessments to allow documentation of their own development and mapping of competencies achieved in line with RCEM curriculum.
Education is an important part of the role. The successful applicant will be expected to receive and deliver teaching. The post holder will receive consultant supervision and have a named consultant supervisor, and may be involved in supporting the training of other staff.
Our Emergency Department consistently receives excellent feedback from trainees, including the clinical fellows, regarding the friendly working environment, the approachability and supportiveness of senior staff, and the training opportunities available. The Consultant body has a breadth of experience including sub-specialty interests like Geriatric Emergency Medicine, Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine, Sports medicine, Education, Emergency Ultrasound, in addition to PEM.

Educations, Training and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBChB or Equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- Successful completion of Foundation Training or equivalent
- EPLS/ APLS from UK recognised course provider
Desirable criteria
- Post Grad Qual - MRCEM, MRCPCH, MRCP, MRCS (2 points for MRCEM, 1 for others)
- Previous experience in Paediatrics or PEM
- US level 1 qualification
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- At least 4 years post registration
- 2 years in EM and /or Paediatrics experience
Desirable criteria
- Worked in NHS (preferably at the level of EM MG)
- Breadth of experience in complementary specialties like ITU, PICU
- Experience in the assessment and treatment of paediatric injuries
Teaching and Supervision
Essential criteria
- Evidence of clinical teaching
Desirable criteria
- Life Support Instructor status in one or more courses
Research and Audit
Essential criteria
- Evidence of previous governance activity. (example -Audit)
Desirable criteria
