Urology Trust Grade Registrar

Registrar

Job overview

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the above post in Urology at Northampton General Hospital.

This post is to join the Registrar tier of the Urology Rota, with elective activity primarily in Urology.

Main duties of the job

Prior NHS experience is an essential requirement.  The department has had excellent recent success in Trust Grade doctors obtaining Urology ST3 training numbers.  This job does not include any regular night or weekend on calls, nor any general surgical on calls.  The successful candidate will be on a one in three rota, (see template below) with on-calls covering Urology referrals/admissions 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday.  The remaining time will be spent in elective Urology, with ward cover but also excellent exposure to theatres and the One Stop Urology clinic.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Urology Registrar to join our supportive and forward-thinking Urology Department. This is an excellent opportunity for a doctor looking to strengthen their clinical experience, develop their surgical skills and build a portfolio for future career progression. Previous NHS experience is essential.

The department has an established track record of supporting Trust Grade Registrars to successfully progress through national Urology ST3 selection. We also welcome more senior candidates, with experience of supporting doctors pursuing the FRCS (Urol) examination and CESR pathway.

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of high-quality elective and emergency urological services, gaining experience across outpatient clinics, diagnostic services and core urological procedures. The department offers exposure to a broad range of specialist procedures and techniques, including percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), robotic prostatectomy, brachytherapy, laparoscopic nephrectomy, UroLift, holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), and flexible ureterorenoscopy with laser treatment.

There are also opportunities to participate in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives and clinical audit, alongside involvement in departmental and undergraduate medical education. The department actively encourages registrars to contribute to teaching and the continued development of the service.

The department has strengthened its emergency urology provision through the development of a dedicated 1 in 7 non-resident middle-grade on-call rota, supported by a Urology SHO-equivalent doctor during working hours. This provides an opportunity to develop experience in the assessment and management of emergency urological presentations within a supportive clinical team.
