Paediatric Staff Nurse

Job overview
The post holder will assist in the overall management of the service ensuring delivery of high standards of care to patients and their families in the ward setting. They will act as a clinical role model providing leadership and support to both nursing and medical staff ensuring the promotion of a safe working environment.
The post holder is responsible for utilising specialist skills to provide high standards of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised care pathways. The post holder is responsible for contributing to the management and co-ordination of the ward, providing leadership and supervision to others carrying out all aspects of the caring process. The post holder will liaison and communicate with networks which are internal and external to the Trust, will actively contribute to setting and maintaining a high standard of nursing care and will act as a role model for teaching, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement, participating in the education, development and mentorship of other staff. In addition there is an expectation that the post holder will deputise and take charge of the ward in the absence of the ward manager and will have the opportunity to develop project management skills in a specialist area of paediatric care within a supportive environment
Part time hours may be considered for a suitable candidate
Main duties of the job
• Undertake induction and competency programmes appropriate to the role.
• Undertake specialist education training as required that will allow paediatric care to be delivered through new ways of working
• Act as a clinical expert and use own knowledge to develop and enhance the development, skills and competence of others.
• Work collaboratively with the practice development team to ensure that education and development opportunities are provided for the ward team to enable staff to be both confident and competent to perform their roles safely.
• Act as a clinical resource, mentor/assessor/supervisor/preceptor of learners and staff as required.
• Actively promote and participate in clinical supervision/mentorship or equivalent support mechanisms.
• Ensure that learners are provided with and encouraged to take advantage of learning outcomes that will enable them to meet their clinical placement outcomes and objectives.
• In the absence of the ward manager ensure there is adequate support, safe mentorship and supervision of learner nurses and all staff.
• Accept delegated line management responsibilities of other team members actively contributing to performance review and the appraisal and personal development planning process within the knowledge and skills framework.
• Ensure that self and all nursing staff practice at all times in accordance with the NMC code of professional practice, raising any concerns with the ward manager and action as directed.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Supporting Clinical Excellence
Take responsibility for the management and organisation of the clinical area
Participate in setting and reviewing standards for practice and evaluating outcomes as part of the clinical governance agenda
Undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific development and competency Programmes.
To contribute to annual appraisals and be responsible for own personal performance/development plan to achieve KSF outline for role.
Able to identify learning needs in self, negotiating a Personal Development Plan recognising own limitations.
To undertake any expanded roles deemed necessary for the role following the Trust policy ‘Expansion of Professional Practice for Registered Healthcare Practitioners
To be responsible for the safe supply, storage, administration, checking and disposal of medications including controlled drugs.
To promote and maintain effective communication both written and verbal.
Supporting Patient Excellence
Actively undertake education, development and supervision of other staff members, assisting them in meeting work demands to provide a quality patient experience.
Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.

Assist the Unit Manager in the completion of a training needs analysis and ensure compliance of the team with Trust expectations in relation to mandatory training and appraisals,
Assist the Unit Manager in the development of team members, participating in the performance of staff appraisal using the NHS knowledge and skills framework.
Assist the Unit Manager in the monitoring workload and skill mix, planning duty rotas ensuring the unit operates effectively and safely.
Assist the Unit Manager in managing the unit team in accordance with Trust policies and procedure i.e. the management of sickness/absence
Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff for the unit including orientation of new staff.
To maintain a suitable learning environment for staff and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor in the supervision and teaching of less experienced staff.
Quality Assurance and Monitoring
Actively promote evidence-based practice within the clinical area Contribute to audit initiatives.
Participate in setting and reviewing standards for practice and evaluating outcomes as part of the clinical governance agenda.
To maintain and promote an awareness of evidence-based practice and participate in its implementation.
To drive research and service improvement/ development programmes within the department.
Supporting Financial Excellence
To develop and maintain an understanding of budgeting, exercising care and economy in the ordering and use of equipment, supported the Unit Manager in the control of departmental budget.
To be responsible for the effective and efficient use of clinical and physical resources.
Person specification
Educations, Training and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registration as an RSCN Or RN(Child) on the NMC register
- Evidence of continued professional development and commitment to further study.
- Teaching and assessing qualification . Mentorship / sign off Mentorship.
- PALS/ APLS / EPLS provider
Desirable criteria
- Holds Leo/RCN Leadership Course or equivalent (Certificate of Achievement) or working towards
- Appropriate experience and competent in areas of expanded practice such as Cannulation and venepuncture, ECG recording.
- Interest and academic ability to undertake further education in paediatric care (Expansion to practice documents)
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 3 years post registration experience.
- Ability to prioritise workload.
- Experience in undertaking annual staff appraisals and supporting the achievement of staff objectives.
- Knowledge and experience of dealing with Child Protection / Safeguarding Children.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of leadership roles and developing teams.
- Evidence of supporting staff and dealing with difficult or challenging situations.
