An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Pharmacy Technician to join the Offender Health Directorate working at HMP Fosse Way.
HMP Fosse Way is set to open in mid-2023 and is a Category CResettlement Prison. HMP Fosse Way will house 1,715 prisoners and focus on the rehabilitation of offenders and their reintegration back into society. It consists of 7 House blocks across 4 floors. There is a dedicated healthcare suite located in the main building with also additional multi use rooms across the establishment including rooms for groups or 1-2-1’s.
You will work in partnership with other providers to achieve high quality outcomes for the service user group.
To support provision of the highest quality patient care within the Offender Health directorate, through personal actions and continuous improvement.
To lead the pharmacy team ensuring delivery of a specialist high quality, safe prison pharmacy ordering, distribution and supply service which reflects National and Local Policy and Priorities, taking into account the high level of security that must be maintained at all times.
Main duties of the job
The role is significant leading on the provision of a comprehensive pharmacy service to patients in the prison, with the aim of affording patients in prisons equivalent healthcare to that in community.
This role supports safe, cost effective prescribing and continuous improvement of patient care.
This post holder will collaborate on Directorate wide initiatives within Offender Health as part of a wider clinical team

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Offender Health Directorate is one of the largest and most successful providers of prison healthcare in the UK. The Directorate provide physical, mental health and substance misuse healthcare services in prisons across the East Midlands, Lincolnshire & Leicestershire.
The Directorate provides healthcare to 7 prisons. You are part of a large peer group of 400+ healthcare professionals with access to peer support, supervision and excellent opportunities for learning and development. We also offer services within the Personality Disorder Pathway, including Therapeutic Communities (within prisons), Community and Prison Personality Disorder services and specialist Veteran Services.
We are committed to working in partnership with prison services, national probation service other healthcare providers and our criminal justice system partners to improve health, support justice to reduce re-offending behaviour. The Offender Health Team truly believes it can make a difference to the lives of offenders by offering consistent, high-quality care in primary, mental health and substance misuse services that are equivalent to health services delivered outside of Prison.
Act as a role model for pharmacy staff within the Trust, to ensure that all staff aspire to provide a consistent and high quality standard of service. This will also contribute to the development of a departmental culture that is in line with the values and organisational culture of the Trust.
Effectively supervise and direct the work of appropriate staff where necessary, leading on all aspects of the supply and distribution of medications, to ensure the safe, timely and accurate provision of medication to patients.
Confirm medication histories (medicines reconciliation) by appropriate means and with patient consent and liaise with the prescriber to ensure continuity of essential prescribed medicines.
Undertake accurate Risk Assessments to ascertain whether patients may hold their medications ‘In Possession’ or otherwise, recording appropriately.
Respond to and process requests from patients in order to facilitate the process of drug administration and supply to patients and ensure the safe effective and timely use of medication by patients, whether Not In Possession or In Possession.
Manage prescribing pathway, including oversight of generated prescriptions to ensure accuracy and a reliable supply chain. Ensure prescriptions are legal and valid before requesting supply.
Work unsupervised in medication administration areas, and be responsible for medicines management within these areas.
Work collaboratively to manage administration of controlled drugs medication to treat substance users in an organised and timely manner with particular attention to maintaining correct records including controlled drug records in accordance with the Trust and Local Policy.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences/ NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent
- Current Professional registration as Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Evidence of up to date CPD portfolio
Desirable criteria
- Competency training and experience of eg stock management
Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of supervising or leading staff
- Experience of accurate stock control
- Clear understanding of the role of pharmacy technicians in prescription management
- Evidence of working in extended technician roles
- Extensive and varied experience of working in pharmacy
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in secure environment eg secure hospital or prison
- Previous experience of using SystmOne
- Previous employment in a customer/ patient facing role
Knowledge
