The Psychological Health team at the NRC undertakes highly specialist assessment, formulation, and intervention, with patients with musculoskeletal, spinal and/or brain injury. Whilst you will work with the whole range of conditions, it is hoped that you will develop a special interest in musculoskeletal injury, and be at the forefront in developing this new specialism in Psychology at Nottingham.
This post is entirely based at the NRC, but organisationally it sits within the Department of Clinical Psychology & Neuropsychology at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. This means that there are excellent opportunities for professional support, CPD and networking.

Main duties of the job
Your will provide highly specialist Clinical Psychology assessment, intervention and advice, working directly with patients and their families. You will also work indirectly, providing advice to other NRC staff in order to meet the psychological needs of patients.
You will contribute to the teaching and training of NRC staff in order to develop their skills and knowledge, in meeting psychological need.
You will provide direction and clinical supervision to Assistant Psychologists within the team, and may be the primary supervisor for a trainee Clinical Psychologist on placement with us.
You will contribute to the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of the service.
You will contribute to, lead and/or supervise research activities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will be a member of the Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology Department, working in the NRC Psychological Health team, and/or other specialisms as directed by the Head of Department. In the first instance this will be at the Linden Lodge Unit City Hospital, then move to the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) Loughborough during the autumn of 2025.
Your role is to provide highly specialist clinical psychology assessment, intervention and advice, on the basis of advanced theoretical and practical knowledge, acquired through doctoral level qualification. This clinical activity will be direct to patients and/or their family, or working indirectly, to advise other staff (individually or as a group) how to manage highly complex cases. You will have patients allocated to you, and you will be responsible for managing their psychological needs, act independently, and be accountable for your professional actions.
Your work will be with rehabilitation patients with various conditions, including musculoskeletal injury and sometimes brain injury.
You will contribute to the teaching and training of staff within the multidisciplinary team, supervision of trainee Clinical Psychologists, and other students who are on work placement with the team. You will supervise the clinical work of Assistant Psychologist(s) within the service, in their work with your patients, and/or be their primary clinical supervisor. However, this post does not have any budgetary or line management responsibility
In collaboration with the lead for the psychology rehabilitation team, you will contribute to the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of the service. This will involve interpreting national guidelines and local policy. You will participate in clinical governance activities.
You will contribute to, lead and/or supervise research activities, under the research programme of the Clinical and Neuropsychology team, as directed by the lead of the team.
You will generally work core hours (either 8am-4pm or 9am-5pm), during which you will be expected to be on-site.
As an NUH staff member, you may be asked to assist in the event of a Major Incident.

Training and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BPS accredited doctoral qualification in Clinical Psychology
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Psychologist.
Desirable criteria
- Further training in a highly specialised psychological therapy or assessment methodology
Experience
Essential criteria
- Worked with a wide diversity of patients in terms of health condition, cognitive ability, age, ethnic and social groups.
- Worked in a range of health settings, including an NHS hospital.
- Worked within a multi-disciplinary team.
Desirable criteria
- Worked in a neuro-rehabilitation setting or specialist physical disability/injury service.
Communication and Relationship skills
Essential criteria
- Highly developed written and oral communication skills.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working via an interpreter.
Analytical and Judgement Skills
Essential criteria
- Demonstrated ability in complex psychological assessment intervention and management.
- Doctoral level research skills.
Planning and Organisation Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Experience of supervising Assistant or Trainee Clinical Psychologists.
Desirable criteria
- Training in supervision of other psychologists.
Physical Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to use multi-media materials and (neuro)psychological test materials.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy test materials (over 10kg).
- Ability to remain seated for up to an hour at a time, and for many hours per day.
Other requirements specific to the role (eg be able to drive or work shifts)

- Up to date immunisations are required (including TB, HepB).
Desirable criteria
- Ability to drive.
- Ability to work flexible hours to suit the service and its clients.
