Job overview

Working under the direct supervision of a member of the nursing team and strictly in accordance with specific service guidelines, patient specific directions and protocols, the Phlebotomist will support the nursing team in the delivery of phlebotomy services. As part of the multidisciplinary team, the Phlebotomist will deliver care within their scope of the service to the entitled patient population. The Phlebotomist will be required to provide excellent service delivery to patients across clinic environments and patients’ own homes. The core hours for this role are currently Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm. This might change according to business needs with possibility of weekend shifts.

Main duties of the job

  • Phlebotomy including home and nursing home visits
  • To obtain venous blood samples from patients, as required by clinicians for laboratory investigations in clinic environments and patients’ own homes.  To work within a team, meeting the needs of the service-defined client group.
  • To check, rotate and order supplies within the service.
  • To obtain venous blood samples from patients in a safe and professional manner and to follow agreed protocols and techniques of blood collection.
  • To thoroughly check each patient’s details to identify them correctly. 
  • Working alone in a clinical environment and patients’ homes.
  • To communicate with the patients and carers, whilst explaining the task being performed.

Person specification

Education and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of education with at least level 3 qualifications including GCSE at English and Maths (or equivalent levels of qualifications)
  • Venepuncture – Venous Blood Collection
  • Full driving licence and the ability to travel between locations

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment
  • Previous Phlebotomy Experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding, acceptance and adherence to the need for strict confidentiality
  • Clinical knowledge and skills

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Flexibility of working hours/able to work at desired times
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
