We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed Consultant Obstetric Anaesthetist to our friendly, supportive and dynamic Anaesthetic Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.   

 

The post is full-time and comprises a total of 10 PA per week (8.0 DCC + 2.0 SPA).  The post has fixed sessions in obstetric and non-obstetric anaesthesia, pre-operative assessment, plus annualised flexible sessions in a wide range of surgical specialties.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to work autonomously in their field of expertise to fulfil the clinical and non-clinical duties within the agreed Job Plan. The appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients under his/her care and be responsible with Consultant colleagues for the provision of both comprehensive elective and emergency anaesthetic services. The appointee will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post according to the agreed Job Plan and give these priority at all times.

NUH serves as a tertiary referral obstetric unit with about 9000 deliveries a year and is the regional centre for the management of women diagnosed with abnormally invasive placentas.

 

The Department of Anaesthesia at Nottingham University Hospitals is friendly, supportive and cohesive.  We provide in-patient and day-case anaesthetic services for a comprehensive range of elective and emergency surgical and non-surgical specialities at the City and QMC campuses.  Our work is supported by Pre-operative Assessment, Acute Pain services and Critical Care services.  At the QMC campus, we also provide anaesthetic services for the Major Trauma service and Emergency Department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post has a draft job plan which best reflects our assessment of what the final plans will be, based on an initial 10 PA contract.  The job plan consists of regular Direct Clinical Care (DCC) sessions covering emergency obstetric theatres and the elective program, plus a commitment to the out-of-hours obstetric anaesthesia service at the City Hospital campus.  The post also comprises of fixed and flexible non-obstetric clinical sessions in a wide range of surgical specialties, which will be scheduled after agreement with the successful candidate. These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service.  If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, his/her Consultant colleagues and the Trust.

Any Consultant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post on a part-time basis; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with Consultant colleagues.  Anaesthesia provides a clinical service across both campuses.  It is anticipated that the post holder may be reasonably asked to provide non-cardiac/thoracic sessions on either campus in the future as required by the service.

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT holder or CCT expected within 6 months of interview or CESR holder

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • ALS Provider or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher professional degree

Clinical Skills/Experience

Essential criteria
  • Training and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan, including on call work.
  • Technical skills/competencies required for all aspects of the job plan.
  • Specific training and experience in anaesthesia for subspecialty work in Obstetric Anaesthesia.
  • Completion of Stage 3 SIA/Advanced Fellowship in Obstetric Anaesthesia
Desirable criteria
  • Specific training in communication skills
  • Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
  • Post-CCT Anaesthesia fellowship

Management Skills

  • Higher management degree/qualification/training
