Job overview
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed full-time Locum Consultant Anaesthetist with a responsibility in Cardiac Anaesthesia and Cardiac Intensive Care to our friendly, supportive and dynamic Anaesthetic Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will be expected to fulfil the duties with the agreed Job Plan. The appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care and be responsible with Consultant colleagues for the provision of both comprehensive elective and emergency anaesthetic services. The appointee will work with the department to provide for reciprocal cover during periods of leave and take all leave in accordance with the relevant overarching trust policies. These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service. If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, his/her Consultant colleagues and the Trust. The appointee will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post according to the agreed Job Plan and give these priority at all times.

There are currently 5 Cardiac Surgeons and 8 dedicated full time cardiac anaesthetists. They provide the full range of adult cardiac surgery to Nottingham and the Trent Strategic Health Authority. The tertiary catchment covers Nottingham and surrounding districts, North Nottinghamshire, and parts of Lincolnshire and Derbyshire (population approximately 1.3 million). The inpatient cardiac surgery service at Nottingham University Hospitals takes place in the Trent Cardiac Centre located on the City Hospital campus. It is based around a 16-bed cardiac critical care unit and one 36-bed ward. There are two cardiac catheter laboratories and two cardiac theatres.
The Department of Anaesthesia at Nottingham University Hospitals is friendly, supportive and cohesive. We provide in-patient and day-case anaesthetic services for a comprehensive range of elective and emergency surgical and non-surgical specialities at the City and QMC campuses. Our work is supported by Pre-operative Assessment, Acute Pain and Critical Care services. At the QMC campus, we also provide anaesthetic services for the Major Trauma service and Emergency Department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- • Recent and Current experience as working as a Senior Cardiac Anaesthetic
- • Should have TOE expertise as demonstrated by a current logbook and successful completion of an accreditation exam (BSE/EACVI)
Desirable criteria
- Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register
- Higher professional degree
- • Full TOE accreditation (BSE/EACVI)
Clinical Skills/Experience
Essential criteria
- Training and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan, including on call work. Technical skills/competencies required for all aspects of the job plan.
- Evidence that relevant clinical skills/knowledge have been maintained.
- • Significant post-graduate experience in Anaesthesia at a senior level in the NHS.
- • Specific training and experience in anaesthesia for subspecialty work in Cardiac Anaesthesia.
- • Completion of Advanced Fellowship in Cardiac Anaesthesia
- • Competence in Transoesophageal Echocardiography (TOE) as demonstrated by successful completion of TOE exam(BSE/EACVI)
