Clinical Fellow in Cardiology (Junior)

NHS Medical & Dental: Junior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

The post has been substantially revised to provide development and education in Cardiology. The post is suitable for a resident doctor wishing to pursue a career in cardiology and is especially aimed at those individuals wishing to gain some cardiology experience in preparation for applying to a training scheme to obtain a national training number (NTN) in cardiology. There is a well-established track record for holders of the Fellow post to successfully gain a NTN.

The post holder will ideally have completed a core training programme or equivalent in general medicine.  Possession of MRCP and previous experience in cardiology is highly desirable. Experience of working within the UK NHS would be advantageous.

The post offers an excellent opportunity for gaining experience in clinical cardiology, cardiac investigations (including echo), interventional procedures, audit/quality improvement, research and teaching in a large tertiary centre cardiology department. The experience will provide a firm footing in all aspects of clinical cardiology and will enhance the chance of successfully gaining a place in a recognised cardiology training programme. The department has also introduced an interview training course for Higher Specialty Training applicants.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to work across both sites of NUH, with the possibility of additional commitments as required following the above integration process, and take part in regular inpatient and outpatient activities. The clinical work involves complex cardiology inpatients, referrals and outpatient clinics covering a wide range of cardiology sub-specialities.

Working for our organisation

Every day, our teams at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) make a difference. We save lives, we improve lives, and we usher in new life. We are proud to play a central role in supporting the health and wellbeing of people in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and our surrounding communities.

With more than 19,000 colleagues, we are the largest employer in Nottinghamshire and one of the biggest and busiest NHS Trusts in the country, serving more than 2.5m residents of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and a further four million people across the East Midlands and beyond. Our Trust spans over three sites including Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC), Nottingham City Hospital and Ropewalk House.

As a teaching hospital, we are instrumental in the education and training of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals. We are proud of our strong relationships with universities across the East Midlands, including the University of Nottingham, Nottingham Trent University and Loughborough University.

As one of the NHS Trusts identified in the New Hospital Programme, a programme of investment in NHS hospitals, we have extensive plans to improve our hospitals and the services we deliver for patients. As well as the redevelopment of the QMC and City Hospital, we are currently building a brand-new 70-bed NHS rehabilitation facility on the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate near Loughborough which aims to transform rehabilitation provision in England.
