Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional to join the innovative Enhanced Perioperative Care Unit (EPOC) as a Deputy Team Leader.

Successful Candidates will supports the delivery of holistic, high quality care to surgical patients at increased risk of adverse outcomes.

Main duties of the job

EPOC is a bespoke built unit, comprising of 10 beds cross-site of post-operative patients from a variety of specialties including Maxillofacial, ENT, HPB, Plastics, Gynaecology, Colorectal, Vascular, Upper GI, Urology, Orthopaedics, Spinal Surgery, Neurosurgery, Breast &  Endocrine and Thoracics. Patients will be cared for at a higher level of care, 1.5, with staff caring for 2 patients each. This unit will have input from a variety of members from the Multi-Disciplinary team including Dietitians, Physiotherapists, Acute Pain Specialist Nurses, CCOT and Critical Care Pharmacists.

As a Deputy Team Leader, you will responsible for the day-to-day running of the unit, supporting the band 5s and 2s with patient care and managing admissions and discharges of patients within EPOC. You will liaise with the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive the highest quality care. 

You will be the clinical experts of your area and lead by example. You will deputise for the band 7 and participate in various link roles within the department. You will have the opportunity to work alongside the Band 7 to continue developing  the EPOC service.

This is a cross-site role and you will be expected to work across both sites equally.

The main duties of an EPOC Deputy Team Leader include:

Day-to-day management of the EPOC unit

Liaising with Recovery, Critical Care and wards to facilitate safe admission and discharge of patients

Support band 5 and 2 staff with care and management of patients

Deputising for the band 7, including management of staff and service

To facilitate efficient and effective care and communication between the team to ensure continuity for all patients within EPOC

To actively contribute to developing the professional practice of the Clinical Support Division

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Current Level One NMC or HCPC Part 1 registration
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Mentorship qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of formal managerial qualifications and courses

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous EPOC, Critical Care, Recovery or Surgical ward experience
  • Competent dealing with patients with complex needs
  • experience in a link nurse role
  • Previous project work
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Acute pain management

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent IT skills & able to produce documents use Microsoft word, excel, etc.
  • Experience using Trust software including Careflow & NerveCentre
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to manage and deal with complaints

Leadership

Essential criteria
  • Able to coordinate clinical area to meet patient needs
  • Adopts and demonstrates an effective leadership style, gaining respect and commitment from others.
  • Where appropriate, challenges clinical decisions to support the best interests of the patient
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience managing a team or service
  • Previous training or study surrounding leadership

Clinical Expertise

Essential criteria
  • Competent and confident in medicines management and all relevant clinical skills and polices applicable to the area

Physical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to perform patient and non-patient manual handling manoeuvres safely and effectively
  • Competent and capable of using medical equipment
