Job overview
The Facilities Assistant will work as part of a team within cleaning and food services within the Trust’s Facilities zonal structure.
The role of Facilities Assistant (Cleaning and Food Service) is multi-skilled and involves catering and cleaning duties within designated patient/non-patient areas of the Trust, carrying out catering tasks and ensuring that cleaning standards are achieved and maintained.
The Facilities Assistant will undertake allocated tasks in a flexible, efficient manner working within defined rotas and work schedules according to Trust policies and procedures.
The post holder will have their main base of work on either campus, City Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre or Ropewalk House however there may be occasions to cover another area.
Main duties of the job

Ensure a timely and accurate response to all cleaning requests.
Work in partnership with the Ward Team, Facilities Team Leader/Assistant Facilities Manager.
Assist in monitoring and maintaining cleaning standards and infection control practices in the department as appropriate.
Maintain the integrity and reputation of the department by effective communication and harmonious attitudes with patients, staff and visitors.
Ensure patient dignity and privacy is respected at all times and report where you feel this has been breached.
Safe use of cleaning equipment/assemble and dismantle cleaning equipment; order stock.
Use effective and efficient cleansing/decontamination techniques across a range of skills.
Suction clean/dry mop floors, spot clean floors and remove spillages.
High dusting, damp dusting furniture, fixtures, fittings and ledges.
Spot clean internal glass as necessary.
Inform patients about the Hospital’s food offer and the procedure for any ad-hoc requests and help them to make an informed choice from the range of foods and beverages.
Order food using the hospital’s electronic ordering devices.
Liaise with nurses, caterers and dieticians to ensure patients food, nutrition/clinical needs and preferences are identified and met.

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of work procedures, practices and equipment for either a catering / cleaning service.
- Ability to undertake NVQ level 1/2 in either cleaning or catering (food hygiene).
Experience
Essential criteria
- Good Basic Education - Ability to read and write, together with numerical skills.
- Experience of working within either catering or cleaning services.
- Working knowledge and understanding of either health and safety and/or risk management, and ability to follow policies and procedures.
- Good knowledge of Health & Safety including COSSH, Safe Systems of catering / cleaning tasks.
Communication and Relationships
Essential criteria
- Good communicator - verbal and written.
- Communication and relationship skills required for dealing with staff, patients, and visitors.
- Ability to follow clear instructions.
- Ability to show empathy and understanding of patient’s needs.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
