Advanced IBD fellowship

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

Full-time to commence 1st April 2026 for 12 months

Applications are invited for the position of Advanced IBD Fellow at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. This fellowship provides an excellent opportunity for trainees aspiring to pursue a subspecialty career in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The successful candidate will join a cohesive and forward-looking gastroenterology and hepatology department with a strong national profile in both clinical practice and academic research. We are seeking a motivated and dynamic individual who has either completed their gastroenterology training or is in the final years of specialist training, ensuring they can gain the maximum benefit from this advanced fellowship.

The Fellow will work under the clinical supervision of eight Consultant IBD Gastroenterologists and engage in IBD research under the guidance of Professor Gordon Moran. The post includes 4–5 clinical sessions per week in IBD outpatients and endoscopy. The remaining time will be dedicated to service development projects, including digital health pathways and the advancement of a small bowel ultrasound service. Candidates with an interest in research will have the opportunity to contribute to Nottingham’s broad IBD research programme, with the potential to extend the fellowship beyond one year to pursue a PhD at the University of Nottingham

Main duties of the job

Clinical Component

  • Gain advanced clinical and endoscopic experience in IBD within a centre managing over 4,500 patients.
  • Participate in outpatient clinics (new and follow-up IBD cases), IBD paediatric transition clinics, multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, and weekly acute IBD clinics.
  • Attend gastroenterology journal clubs and research meetings.
  • Undertake endoscopy sessions (upper and lower diagnostic and therapeutic procedures), with a focus on disease assessment, surveillance, and IBD-related therapeutic interventions.
  • Optional opportunities to manage acute inpatient IBD cases and support nurse-led ward reviews.
  • Involvement in the acute gastroenterology service is available but not mandatory.

Academic Component

  • Contribute to IBD research, primarily hosted by the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre.
  • Engage with ongoing projects or initiate independent research, with support for national/international presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Research opportunities include systematic reviews, meta-analyses, mechanistic and experimental medicine studies, interventional trials (nutrition/exercise), and advanced imaging (MRI and sonography).
  • Work alongside a collaborative research community of other PhD students, research fellows, project managers, and research nurses.
  • Gain experience managing a diverse research portfolio, including investigator-led and commercial phase 2/3/4 IBD trials.
